Don't Miss the FREE Family Day Open House at VHS on Saturday ...

The Virginia Historical Society Free Family Day Open House is this Saturday.

Give us a few hours and we will give you the opportunity to make lasting memories.

From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, the Virginia Historical Society is hosting its annual Free Family Day Open House.

Here?s a list of activities for the day.

  • The Museum Shop is hosting a huge book sale featuring more than 4,000 gently used books that will be sold at deeply discounted prices.
  • VHS staff will be doing educational demonstrations with replica artifacts, animal pelts, reproduction tools, toys, and musical instruments.
  • There will be craft activities for young visitors, such as women?s suffrage paper dolls and Henry ?Box? Brown boxes.
  • Behind the scenes tours offer the chance to explore items buried in the building?s cornerstone in 1912 and recently unearthed (see this blog for more information).
  • Historians are pulling out some special collection pieces, including items related to the Titanic, Woodrow Wilson?s presidential campaign, and early 20th century Kline Kars manufactured in Richmond.
  • The paper conservation lab will be open for special tours. Visitors will see what fragile and damaged items the conservators are currently cleaning and preserving.

  • Richmond Conservation Studio staff will be working on and answering questions about cleaning the Hoffbauer Civil War murals.
  • Costumed interpreters from Richmond Discoveries will be demonstrating life on the Civil War battle and home front.
  • Virginia history trivia contests will give teams the chance to test their knowledge and win big prizes.
  • The Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra will present two interactive and entertaining performances.
  • Snoopy will be visiting from Kings Dominion.
  • VHS staff will demonstrate the Unknown No Longer slave name database.
  • There will be opportunities to register to win prizes from places like Starbucks, Deco Ristorante, and Bandito?s Burrito Lounge.

Admission and all activities are free.

Plus, Open House gives you a great opportunity to see all of the exhibitions currently on display. VHS staff are in the building all day to answer questions about the various objects featured in the museum galleries.

Food trucks will be parked on the front lawn to serve lunch items, ice cream, and coffee drinks.

Visitors of all ages love the activities the VHS offers during the event. But, I think more than that, visitors appreciate and remember what an interesting, educational, and enjoyable time they had at the VHS.

I hope to see you on Saturday, July 21, at the Virginia Historical Society Free Family Day Open House. Invite friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers along with you to make lasting memories.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Guild Signature
