Rowling?s post-Harry era begins Sept. 27 with the release of ?The Casual Vacancy.? The new novel is a 512-page tale of class warfare, morality, and small town politics set in an idyllic fictional English village.

The question on everyone?s mind: Whether Rowling can successfully crossover from her stratospherically triumphant reign as a children?s author and creator of the 450-million-selling Potter books, which made her net worth almost $900 million and set the bar for forthcoming books frighteningly high, to well-received adult novelist.

This much is clear: ?The Casual Vacancy? is no ?Harry Potter? and Rowling, thankfully, makes no apologies for this decidedly different track. Set in the fictional English village of Pagford, the book begins as a ?rural comedy of manners? that builds into a portrayal of class warfare, strewn throughout with treatises on social welfare. Following the death of Pagford council member Barry Fairbrother, the well-heeled town is pitched into a divisive battle about its connection to Fields, a neighboring town characterized by its public housing and poverty. Historically, Pagford extended a hand to Fields ? children from Fields could attend primary school in Pagford (?a place of flower baskets and other middle-class comforts) and the town also ran a drug-treatment clinic that served many in Fields. But with the death of council member Fairbrother, Pagford?s ?anti-Fields faction sees an opportunity to rid Pagford of this burden.?

After reading the 512-page novel and interviewing the famously reserved Rowling, writer Ian Parker shared his thoughts in a 10,000-word feature in the New Yorker.?

?Within a few pages, it was clear that the novel had not been written for children,? Parker writes. ?The Casual Vacancy,? after all, is a tale of ?class warfare set amid semi-rural poverty, heroin addiction, and teenage perplexity and sexuality.?

??But reviewers looking for echoes of the Harry Potter series will find them. ?The Causal Vacancy? describes young people coming of age in a place divided by warring factions, and the deceased council member, Barry Fairbrother ? who dies in the first chapter but remains the story?s moral center ? had the same virtues, in his world, that Harry had in his ? tolerance, constancy, a willingness to act.?

Even Rowling found similar themes. ?I think there?is?a through-line,? the author told Parker of the New Yorker. ?Mortality, morality, the two things that I obsess about.?

But, by most accounts, the similarities end there. For those accustomed to Rowling?s more traditional, buttoned-up children?s fare, ?The Casual Vacancy? is most certainly not that.

There?s this: ?The leathery skin of her upper cleavage radiated little cracks that no longer vanished when decompressed.? And this, about a lustful little boy who sits on a school bus ?with an ache in his heart and in his balls.?

Abused Georgia teen banished to California by stepfather: police

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A small, gaunt Georgia teen who turned up at a Los Angeles bus terminal told police his abusive stepfather had given him $200 and a list of homeless shelters before putting him on a bus, authorities said on Thursday.

Police were called to the city's Greyhound Bus Station on September 11 by a retired sergeant, Joe Gonzales, who was working security there, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said in a news release.

The officers found 18-year-old Mitch Comer, a "pale, gaunt" youngster weighing 87 pounds and standing just over five feet tall, whom police at first thought was aged 12 or 13.

"Comer explained that his stepfather had told him he was now a man, given him $200 and put him on a bus in Jackson, Mississippi, with a list of homeless shelters he had located on the Internet," Los Angeles police said in a news release.

Investigating the story further, Comer provided details to police of abuse over a period of at least four years. After removing him from school in the eighth grade, his stepfather, identified as Paul Matthew Comer, 48, shut him in a room.

The youngster was fed only small amounts of food and forced to hold a grueling disciplinary position for eight hours a day with the top of his head against a wall, his fingers interlaced behind his head, and his feet raised off the ground.

The younger Comer told police he had two younger sisters still living at home. LAPD contacted local Paulding County, Georgia, sheriff's deputies, who immediately went to the family home and took Comer's stepfather and mother, Sheila Marie Comer, in for questioning.

The parents were subsequently arrested on child abuse and false imprisonment charges. Detectives also put Mitch Comer's younger sisters, Catrina and Lya, into protective custody with Paulding County Children's Services.

After staying in a Los Angeles board and care home, Mitch Comer flew to Georgia on Wednesday to help in the investigation and legal proceedings against his parents.

"I am greatly relieved and thankful that one of our retired officers brought this victim to our attention and started the process to uncover these heartbreaking circumstances," Police Chief Charlie Beck said in a statement.

"Without the intervention of retired Sergeant Gonzales, Mitch Comer and his young sisters would still be suffering," he added.

The localization and structure of the iridial muscles and associated nerves of the newt (Cynops pyrrhogaster) were examined by electron microscopy with some histochemical studies of catecholamine and acetylcholinesterase. The sphincter muscle, which was composed of pigmented smooth muscle cells, was located circumferentially in the pupillary margin of the iris. Sphincter muscle cells formed occasional close contacts with each other by protruding cellular processes. Numerous gap junctions and desmosomes were observed between anterior and posterior pigment epithelium of the iris, but not between muscle cells. Nerve endings formed varicosities and were composed of agranular vesicles and/or granular vesicles. There was no dilator muscle in this species. Prominent circumferential catecholamine fluorescence was observed in the pupillary margin. Acetyl- cholinesterase positive and negative muscle cells and nerve fibers were found within the sphincter muscle region. INTRODUCTION The iris sphincter and dilator muscles, known to be the iris muscle in the mammalian eye, change the size of the pupil and regulate the quantity of light. Studies on the iris muscles have been a fascinating subject from the standpoint of develop- ment and differentiation of the muscle, because these muscles are unique in that the sphincter muscle is the only vertebrate smooth muscle known to be derived from neuroectoderm [1-4] and the dilator muscle has myoepithelial charac- ters [1, 5-6]. They are innervated by an autonomic nervous system [7-10], which is advantageous, in that we can easily detect the action of nerves through miosis and mydriasis of the eye. In addition to morpholgical studies on the iris muscle [1-6, 11-13], numerous pharmacological and elec- trophysiological reports have been made on this nervous system using various kinds of animals [14- 20]. 7 Steps To Instant Calm

Between your busy work schedule, taking care of the kids, running errands, and, oh, the hundred other things you have to do in a day, it's easy to forget the amount of stress you're actually under.

But your body is well aware. All that tension could start a chain reaction of health problems. "When you repeatedly get stressed, your nervous system stays keyed up, so even small amounts of stress can make you feel overwhelmed," says Henry Emmons, MD, author of The Chemistry of Calm.

That's why it's so important to build in a relaxation routine for those times when life goes haywire. Learn how to cultivate calm with these simple suggestions.

• 1. Look For The Signs

  The best way to manage your stress is to keep it from building up in the first place. But it can be hard to tell when you're headed toward the danger zone, because your body's signals can be subtle. "People often aren't aware that stress affects quality of sleep -- you may get eight hours, but still not get much deep sleep, so you feel worn out," Dr. Emmons says. To keep your stress level in check, take a few minutes each day to think over any unusual changes in your habits or physical health that may be spurred by anxiety.

• 2. Shift Your Focus

  When you're feeling tense, you may get the (unproductive) urge to mentally replay what went wrong over and over in your mind. Dr. Emmons recommends shifting your focus to your body instead. Find a quiet place to sit down, and concentrate on feeling the seat beneath you. Then take long, deep breaths from your diaphragm; try inhaling through your nose for a count of four, holding for two and exhaling through your mouth for seven. Exhaling longer than you inhale deepens your breathing, which helps calm your nervous system. "You can even practice your breathing when you're not stressed, so you know exactly what deep-breathing counts soothe you," Dr. Emmons says.

• 3. Get A Move On

  It's easy to use stress as an excuse to skip exercise -- you've got way too many other things on your mind, right? But working out actually helps balance stress hormones, Dr. Emmons says. So take a break, and walk up and down a few flights of stairs, or sign up for that kickboxing class you've been dying to try. Then cool down from your routine with some mellow music: Make a special "soothing" playlist for your iPod, recommends Beth Hamilton, MD, co-author of <em>So Stressed: The Ultimate Stress-Relief Plan for Women</em>. Research suggests that your brain waves will sync up with the slow rhythm, putting you in a meditative state.

• 4. Snack Right

  During stressful times, it's human nature to want to treat yourself to a piece of cake. But it's more important than ever to stick to your healthy eating habits, says Elizabeth Somer, RD, author of <em>Eat Your Way to Happiness.</em> Sugary munchies spike your blood-glucose level, making you feel even more jittery. For a healthy yet stress-busting treat, dip fresh strawberries in dark chocolate sauce, Somer suggests. The fruit's vitamin C decreases stress-induced free radicals, while dark chocolate helps reduce stress hormones (such as cortisol) in the body. Another option: Snack on carrots or celery sticks. Chomping on crunchy (but healthy!) snacks helps you release pent-up frustration, Somer says.

• 5. Phone A Friend

  Spending time with pals helps our bodies pump out the feel-good hormone oxytocin. So meet up with a friend at the end of a crazy-busy day, or call during your lunch break. Even better: Make time to hang out regularly -- you'll get a continuous boost to your well-being. Just don't turn your talks into bitchfests; ranting will get you worked up again, Dr. Emmons says.

• 6. Get Out!

  Holing up at your desk can make you get stuck in "I'm overwhelmed!" mode. Simply breathing some fresh air can improve your outlook, helping you deal with tough situations more calmly. Step outside and enjoy the head-clearing moment rather than thinking of all the things you have to get done. If there's a garden nearby, stop and smell the flowers. Research shows that inhaling certain scents (like lavender) can help reset a stressed immune system to normal levels.

• 7. Prep For Bed

  You know how it goes: Just when you lie down for a good night's sleep, all your worries come rushing back. And the lack of sleep only makes you feel more anxious. To combat this vicious cycle, reach for a pad and pen, and jot down any negative thoughts or to-dos that pop into your head, says Sue Patton Thoele, author of The Mindful Woman. It's counterintuitive, but getting your thoughts on paper actually helps you put them aside.

Heli-skiing is a form of extreme skiing that is designed for people who are passionate about adventure and taking risks. Heli-skiing is downhill skiing except you will not be taking the chair lift to the top of the mountain. You access the slopes by getting off a helicopter and hitting the slopes from the air. Skiers are actually skiing off-piste which means they are skiing on ungroomed terrain that is not marked into trails. When you heli-ski, you can make the experience safe and fun if you have the right ski equipment.

The mountain environment in which heli-skiing takes place is always changing and demands constant adjustments to your risk and safety management. Because the slopes are ungroomed and there is a risk of avalanches, it is important to have the right ski equipment to ensure safety. Equipment that is important to have when heli-skiing includes: fat powder skis; poles; and a ski backpack equipped with a probe and shovel. The guides will carry a backpack with a shovel probe, first aid kit and radio, as well as transceivers and rescue equipment. Avalanche transceivers are mandatory and a buddy system is compulsory because of the danger of avalanches. Free-ride or all-mountain skis are used by most heli-skiers. They find these skis easier to handle and use in difficult terrain and they spend less time looking for lost skis. They have also been linked with reduced injury rates

As well as having the right skis when heli-skiing, you need to have the right ski boots. It is important that the ski boots you wear are comfortable and have a smooth forward flex. The boots should be broken in as new boots can be tight and uncomfortable. The boot should not have too much pressure in the toes, ankle, or lower part of the calf.

Many heli-skiers will wear helmets when they heli-ski although they are not mandatory. The best type of helmet to wear is one that gives a low profile or ? coverage shell and a removable neoprene ear cove. Helmets, such as race helmet, that fully cover the ear are a safety risk if they prevent the wearer from hearing the heli-ski guide.

Other equipment that is important is warm gloves, sunglasses, and dressing in layers of clothing to keep warm. A shell-type jacket and pants that are waterproof and windproof made from a material such as Gortex is a good choice. This will let you add or take off layers as you adjust to changes in temperature. Your first layer of clothing should be breathable so you do not remain wet if you perspire.

Although heli-skiing operations use guides and pilots who are trained and experienced in evaluating snow conditions, stability, and risk management, individuals must take care when heli-skiing. Heli-skiing is for people in good health who are able to handle strenuous adventures. It is also for the experienced skier. When you do participate in heli-skiing, it is important to have the right equipment with you to ensure your safety.

Disney film to show how "Mary Poppins" flew from book to screen

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The tale of how the world's most beloved nanny, Mary Poppins, flew from the pages of a popular book onto the big screen is the subject of a new film starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, Disney said on Wednesday.

The film called "Saving Mr. Banks" began production on Wednesday. It tells of Walt Disney's 20-year pursuit of the film rights to author P.L. Travers' novel "Mary Poppins," Walt Disney Co's movie studio said in a statement.

Hanks will play Walt Disney, marking the first time the legendary animator and film producer has ever been depicted in a dramatic film. Thompson will play Travers, who reluctantly granted Disney the film rights while demanding script and character control that clashed with Disney's vision for the movie musical.

The story of the magical English nanny who flies with her umbrella has also been made into a hit stage musical, playing on Broadway. The Cameron Mackintosh production was also a hit in London's West End.

John Lee Hancock, whose best-known films include "The Rookie" and "The Blind Side," will direct "Saving Mr. Banks." The film also stars Colin Farrell as Travers' father and Rachel Griffiths as her aunt.

"Saving Mr. Banks" will be released sometime in 2013, Disney said.
