Ford CEO Mulally made $29.5 million in 2011

(AP) ? The pay package for Ford CEO Alan Mulally rose 11 percent last year to $29.5 million, or a little more than $5 for every vehicle sold.

Mulally earned $2 million in salary, up 43 percent from 2010, and stock awards valued at $13.9 million, up 86 percent from the prior year. But his performance bonus dropped 42 percent to $1.8 million because Ford fell short of market share and quality targets in some areas. Mulally also received $612,587 in perks and other compensation for things like the use of a private jet, a personal car and driver and security.

Despite rising commodity costs and charges for a big expansion in Asia, 2011 was the company's third straight profitable year. There were problems. Ford's U.S. quality ratings were tarnished by glitches in its touch-screen dashboard systems and shifting problems in some automatic transmissions. And while the company gained market share in Europe, its share was flat in other regions.

Mulally's compensation was the highest since 2006, the year he was hired from Boeing Co. to turn around Ford. He made $39.1 million that year thanks to a performance bonus and compensation for leaving the Chicago-based airplane maker.

Mulally's pay ? which put him among the highest-paid CEOs in the U.S. last year when he made $26.5 million ? has angered some Ford factory workers. United Auto Workers President Bob King has called his compensation level "morally wrong." Mulally defended his pay in an interview last fall with The Associated Press, saying most of it is tied to the performance of the company's shares.

"The vast majority of my compensation is at risk, because the numbers that you see are only realizable if we profitably grow the corporation. And that's the way it should be," he said.

Ford's stock price fell 36 percent in 2011. It's climbed 54 percent since Mulally joined the company.

Ford Motor Co. reported last year's compensation for Mulally and for company Chairman Bill Ford on Friday in a filing with the federal government.

Bill Ford, who stepped down as CEO when he hired Mulally, saw his compensation drop 55 percent to $11.3 million in 2011. That was partly because his 2010 salary included compensation from prior years that he earned when the company achieved sustained profitability. Bill Ford's performance bonus also dropped 42 percent to $520,000 and his stock awards fell 21 percent to $2.8 million.

Ford spent $1.4 million on perks and other compensation for Bill Ford. Most of that went to private security.

Dearborn-based Ford earned $20.2 billion in 2011, or $4.94 per share. Worldwide sales rose 6.7 percent to nearly 5.7 million cars and trucks, despite sales slowdowns in Europe and China and old products that made it tough for Ford to compete in South America.

In Friday's filing, Ford also announced the company's annual meeting will be held May 10 in Wilmington, Del.

The Associated Press formula for executive compensation calculates an executive's total compensation during the last fiscal year by adding salary, bonuses, perks, above-market interest the company pays on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock and stock options awarded during the year. The AP formula does not count changes in the present value of pension benefits, which makes the AP total slightly different in most cases from the total reported by companies to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The value that a company assigned to an executive's stock and option awards for 2011 was the present value of what the company expected the awards to be worth to the executive over time. Companies use one of several formulas to calculate that value. The number is just an estimate and the amount an executive ultimately receives will depend on the performance of the company's stock.

Most stock compensation programs require an executive to wait a set time to receive shares or exercise options.

Paula Deen Suffers Legal Setback In 'N Word' Lawsuit | Radar Online

Splash

By Jen Heger - Radar Assistant Managing Editor

Paula Deen has suffered a legal setback in an explosive 'N word' lawsuit that was filed against her by a former general manager of one of her restaurants, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

Lisa Jackson filed the lawsuit March 6 in Georgia against Paula Deen Enterprises, claiming a shocking pattern of alleged racism, including the use of the 'N word', sexual harassment and infliction of emotional distress and assault while working at Uncle Bubba's Oyster House.

EXCLUSIVE DOCS: Judge Denies Paula Deen?s Request For A Gag Order

Deen's lawyers sought a gag order in the case because according to court documents, "a protective order is necessary because Ms. Jackson and her counsel have made abundantly clear that they intend to engage in a path of personal and financial destruction because Paula Deen would not pay their pretrial settlement demand...Through her cooking and television exposure, Mrs. Deen has arguably become the face of Southern cuisine and living....For a public figure such as Mrs. Deen, even if Ms. Jackson's allegations are proven untrue, the harm resulting from the continuing mass dissemination of the allegations may never be undone."

PHOTOS: Celebrity Racist Rants

However, Judge Louisa Abbot has now denied the gag order request and said in her written ruling, "Having considered the parties' arguments, the Court finds the litigants' concerns about potentially adverse pretrial publicity and the potential effects of damage to their reputations do not outweigh any of the constitutional principles invoked by this motion, including freedom of press and speech."

The shocking lawsuit has blockbuster allegations including one in which Jackson states that she was appointed by Deen to handle the catering and staff for Bubba's wedding in 2007, and she asked Deen what the servers should wear: "Well what I would really like is a bunch of little n***ers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around," Jackson alleges Deen told her. "Now, that would be a true Southern wedding wouldn't it? But we can't do that because the media would be on me about that."

DOCUMENTS: Read The Explosive Lawsuit Against Paula Deen Enterprises (WARNING OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE)

Another alleged racist incident listed in the lawsuit: "In the presence of Ms. Jackson and Uncle Bubba's restaurant manager and a vendor, Bubba Hiers stated they should send President Obama to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico so he could n***er-rig it."

The queen of Southern cooking says in court docs that Jackson attempted to extort her for $1.25 million dollars. "Prior to the filing of this suit, Jackson repeatedly threatened to assert scurrilous claims publicly in the press unless huge sums of money were paid to Jackson and her counsel, which demand was refused. Jackson's suit should be dismissed, for among other reasons, on equitable grounds on the basis of clean hands."

According to a letter from Jackson's attorney, she would settle out of court, but Deen's lawyers declined that offer, and shortly thereafter the lawsuit was filed.

Young Syrian activists put life on hold in revolt

TRIPOLI, Lebanon (AP) ? Last year, Khalid was a 19-year-old Syrian university student whose modest dreams were to land a job and earn enough to marry his girlfriend ? not simple tasks given Syria's weak economy and his lack of connections to the ruling elite.

Since then, he's become a fugitive activist in the fight to topple President Bashar Assad. Khalid said he has been tortured by security forces and hasn't spoken to his loved ones in months for fear he'll endanger their lives.

Young people like Khalid have manned the front lines in the uprisings across the Arab world, organizing protests, documenting violence and taking up arms against government troops.

Analysts say youth frustration has proven to be a potent force in an area where some 60 percent of people are under 25 ? making it one of the world's youngest regions.

Many youth activists say they had plenty to protest, facing adulthood in societies where decades of autocratic rule left them with limited freedom and constricted economies. For Khalid and other young Syrians, the uprising is about more than just toppling a dictator. It's a fight for their generation's dreams.

"I can't think about my own life now," said Khalid, now 20, after sneaking across the Syrian border into Lebanon. "All I can think about is working to make the revolution succeed because it will have a huge effect on the lives of all youth."

The young have been key players in Syria's uprising since its start in March 2011, when security forces arrested a group of teenagers who scrawled anti-regime graffiti on a wall in the southern city of Daraa, generating huge protests.

Assad's security forces violently cracked down, deploying tanks, snipers and thugs to quash the spreading dissent. Later, many civilians took up arms to defend their communities and attack security forces. The U.N. says more than 9,000 people have been killed, including at least 500 children. Hundreds more children have been injured, detained or abused.

As the death toll mounts, young activists acknowledge some naivete in their decision to challenge one of the region's most brutal police states. Their elders often tried to dissuade them, recalling how Assad's father and predecessor, Hafez, killed between 10,000 and 25,000 people while crushing a 1982 rebellion in the city of Hama.

"Many of them were scared. They saw what the regime can do and told us, 'We were there in 1982. You weren't.'" said Mustafa, 24, who fled the coastal city of Banias to Lebanon last year. Like Khalid, he asked only that his first name be used for fear of endangering relatives inside Syria.

Still, many have decided that a chance at better lives was worth dropping their studies, jobs and marriage plans.

Before the uprising, Khalid studied engineering at a university in the central city of Homs, even though he was interested in computers and wasn't sure he'd ever get a job. He dreamed of going to school abroad, but government scholarships went to students in the ruling Baath Party.

He never thought about politics, but began paying close attention when uprisings toppled dictators in Tunisia and Egypt last year. In March, security forces stopped an anti-regime demonstration on campus, then forced students to attend a pro-Assad rally.

In April, security forces killed protesters in his neighborhood, Baba Amr, then posted troops to deter future gatherings.

"That was the first time I got mad and decided I was against the regime," Khalid said.

Anger grew in the neighborhood as the regime crushed more protests and raided homes to arrest activists, sometimes detaining their parents, he said.

Khalid started a Facebook page to commemorate those killed while working with other activists to film protests to post online.

In October, security forces stopped him at a checkpoint and found a photo on his cellphone of a government sniper, Khalid said. At the police station, he was beaten with a mop handle until his back was numb, then locked with six others in a cell so small that only three people could sit down at a time, he added.

For 20 days, he was regularly beaten during interrogations and suspended by plastic strips around his wrists, he said. He finally escaped with the help of a sympathetic security officer.

"After that, I knew I'd never shut up," he said. "I wanted to do the impossible to make the revolution succeed."

But first, he broke up with his girlfriend, worrying that their relationship would endanger her. She cried when he told her.

"I had to do it for her safety," he said. "I have set out on a martyr mission. As soon as you say, 'I'm an activist,' you know you could die."

At that time, Baba Amr was becoming a national symbol of the uprising. Army defectors has flocked to the area, making it harder for troops to come in, protests grew and the youth organized into media, medical and even trash pickup committees.

That defiance drew the regime's wrath, and in early February troops surrounded Baba Amr and shelled it daily. Khalid and the media team kept working, filming and uploading videos and communicating with journalists and other activists via Skype.

Despite the violence, there was youthful mischief. When an explosion near their makeshift media center silenced a rooster often heard in their videos, they commemorated him with his own Facebook page.

On Feb. 22, government rockets hit the media center, killing a number of activists and foreign journalists Marie Colvin and Remi Ochlik, who had sneaked into Syria. Government troops captured the area on March 1, after armed rebels and activists pulled out.

Khalid says he's seen the bodies of some of his relatives in activist videos from the neighborhood and hasn't spoken to his parents in two months.

None of the activists' claims could be independently verified. The Syrian government bars most media from operating inside the country.

Another Baba Amr activist who also fled to Lebanon said he passed up a chance to study medicine in Germany so he could work to topple Assad.

"I reached a point where I realized that Syria could have a good future," he said, declining to give his name for fear of reprisals against his relatives. "I used to want to go to a developed country, but someday, after Assad falls, Syria will be like that. But we'll build it ourselves."

While international condemnation of Assad has mounted, diplomacy has failed to stop the violence and many activists acknowledge that the conflict is unlikely to end soon.

Most are still driven by the hope of better lives in Syria.

"I want to go back and study, get a job in a company," said Mustafa, the activist from Banias, who was a barber before the uprising and now helps Syrian refugees settle in Lebanon.

He, too, put marriage plans on hold because of the uprising, but is still in touch with his girlfriend whom he hopes to marry someday.

"Perhaps the day after the regime falls," he said, laughing.

Killer r?sum?: How to woo the machines

msnbc.com

Using the right keywords several times in a r?sum? can make the machines take notice.

By Cindy Perman, cnbc.com

If you are still writing your r?sum? for humans, you?re doing it wrong.

It?s fine if you prep a human-friendly version to hand out in the interview but in this day and age, you need to have one that catches the eye of the machines ? before they let you through the gate to speak to the humans.

??One secret to a killer r?sum? is to use the right keywords to improve your performance with search engines,? said Tony Lee, the publisher of CareerCast.com.

?Remember the days when we learned how to orient our name vertically, add a picture and throw in a column format to really wow ?em?

?Yeah, throw that out the window.

?Remember when we strove to be concise on our r?sum?s and not repeat ourselves?

?Toss that one on the recycling pile.

?Today, it?s all about wooing the machines.

?And in the same way that you choose your words carefully to woo someone you?d like to date, you have to choose your words carefully on your r?sum? to woo the machines reading it.

So, what?s the machine-equivalent of ?Wow, you have the most striking eyes??

?First, you want to include a target job title and include it up high on your r?sum?, an area favored by algorithms, according to Martin Yate, author of the ?Knock ?Em Dead? book series.

?That sounds simple but it puts you at a huge advantage: Seven out of 10 r?sum? writers forget to include a target job title, according to CareerCast. But don?t just stop there ? use all the words and phrases to describe the job you want.

Equally important, include a ?performance profile? ? also high up ? that describes your ability to do the job, CareerCast suggests.

The third thing that should be high up is a description of your professional skills.

?Placing these skills near the top improves your performance with those search-engine algorithms, and provides the recruiter with a series of 'aha' moments as each word and phrase drives home your suitability,? CareerCast says.

And, while it took a long time to teach you to be brief and not repeat yourself in the cover letter and r?sum?, in this day and age of machine-scanned r?sum?s, repeating your professional skills two or three times farther down the r?sum?, where you you talk about your past employment experience, can actually double or triple your r?sum??s ranking in a search that uses those words, according to CareerCast.

?Employers use keywords to filter through piles of r?sum?s on their desk. If your r?sum? is handed to them without the keywords that match the job requirements, then your application may hit the ?reject pile? without a second glance,? said Kerry K. Taylor, who writes the personal-finance blog Squawkfox.

Fox advises finding eight keywords and driving those home.

So, how do you find these magical eight keywords?

?You don?t need a degree in English to find your eight keyword nouns,? Taylor said. ?Keyword nouns tend to be the ?hard? skills, industry-specific qualifications and job-specific terms employers look for in a job candidate.?

Of course, those are going to be different for everyone. A writer and an underwater welder will have very different keywords.

Taylor suggests looking at the following areas to come up with your keywords: degrees or certifications, university or college names, job titles, product names, technical terms, industry jargon, job-specific buzzwords, company names, service types, professional organizations, software or hardware packages and computer lingo.

A great way to find your eight is to look at five to 10 job listings with similar job titles to your field, Taylor said, and pluck out the words that are repeatedly mentioned. Be sure to include them not only in your r?sum? but also your cover letter.

Taylor offers an example of how that strategy of plucking keywords from job listings works here.

Other important tips for winning over a robot recruiter?s heart: Make sure your r?sum? is text only ? no special formatting like bullets, tabs, italics, etc. Choose a functional font such as Arial or Times New Roman in 10 or 12 point font. And use a standard address format. If you have more than one phone number, enter it on a separate line.

Ready ? aim ? fire those keywords!

What Does Attachment Parenting Look Like? | Natural Family Today

There?s a lot of talk in the news media about Attachment Parenting lately, especially with celebrity-turned-PhD Mayim Bialik?s new book, Beyond the Sling, in which she describes her brand of parenting, which does include Attachment Parenting (AP). And there are a lot of questions being asked. As a local Resource Leader for Attachment Parenting International, I?ve been fielding both concern and applause for the various conversations swirling around Mayim and AP. I wanted to give a little clarification.

First of all, what is Attachment Parenting exactly? Technically, it?s a research-backed approach to parenting that promotes securely attached kids. What?s that mean? ?Attachment? is a term to describe the emotional bond between two people. A person with a secure attachment style is able to establish and maintain a healthy emotional bond with other people. A kid who is securely attached to his parent means that the kid and parent share a healthy emotional bond ? with all the give and take of any emotionally healthy relationship. People with secure attachment styles are less affected by stress and generally happier in relationships than those with insecure attachment styles.

Research shows that parents who raise children with secure attachment in mind do two things: They provide consistent and loving care, and they respond with sensitivity. This can look different for different people. For parents who are living the natural lifestsyle, this often takes the form of natural birth, breastfeeding and baby-led weaning, babywearing, cosleeping, stay-at-home parenting, and gentle discipline. Of course, there are plenty of parents who do these parenting techniques who are not necessarily living a natural lifestyle, but there are also plenty of parents who bottle-feed and crib-sleep and work outside the home who are still raising their children with attachment-promoting strategies.

There are other parenting practices that are often considered part of AP, such as elimination communication, cloth diapering, not vaccinating, and homebirthing. This are wonderful options available to parents, but in terms of attachment research, they are not part and parcel with AP ? with the consistent and loving care and the responding with sensitivity that is documented by research to contribute directly to developing those emotionally healthy bonds that we?re striving to do. That?s not to say that parents who choose cloth diapering are not doing something really great for their kids; it?s saying that parents who choose to use disposable diapers can still be doing AP.

And this is awesome news ? that anyone can be AP ? because the more people raised to be able to have an emotionally healthy relationship, the better our world will be.

Selena Gomez to Haters: Bring It!

Due to her relationship with Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez is not the most popular singer on the planet.

She's faced numerous death threats over the past year, in fact, with authorities actually getting involved at times due to the serious nature of the personal attacks.

But Selena is handling the pressure as best she can, never backing away from those who claims to love Justin, yet somehow also don't want him to be happy in his relationship. Latest case in point: check out a photo Gomez posted to Instagram on the set of her new film, Spring Breakers.

Selena Gomez on Instagram

This isn't the first time Selena has addressed her critics. She said in an interview last year that the single "Who Says" was written "to the haters... to the people who try to bring you down."

As you can tell here, though, those people have failed miserably when it comes to Selena Gomez. You tell 'em, girl!

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Even the landed gentry of "Downton Abbey" would be impressed: A philanthropist is giving $1 million to PBS' "Masterpiece," U.S. home of the British upstairs-downstairs drama series.

The gift is the largest yet for the Masterpiece Trust, a fund-raising initiative started last year, PBS said Wednesday. The donor is Darlene Shiley of San Diego, who previously gave $250,000 to support "Masterpiece."

The drama showcase scored a hit with the second season of "Downton Abbey," which drew a total of 17 million viewers to make it the most-watched "Masterpiece" miniseries on record, PBS said.

"Masterpiece," from WGBH Boston, began searching for new funding sources after losing longtime sponsor Exxon Mobil in 2004. The series finally gained a new corporate supporter last year when Viking River Cruises came aboard.

sandusky interview with bob costas live oak mark kelly mark kelly jeff goldblum uc berkeley annie

Do you befriend a potential boss on Facebook?

1 hr.

So you go out to a job interview, and everything went well, but when you get home the hiring manager has sent you a friend request on Facebook and LinkedIn. What should you do?

Some people have gotten their jobs through Twitter, but this seems a little creepy. Should you accept his friend request? What if you get hired and this is normal for everyone who works there? What should you do?

I know a number of people who owe their current jobs to interactions with companies or individuals on Twitter or LinkedIn. Social media can be a powerful tool to help people get exposure and connect with people ? people with jobs to offer ? that they would never have spoken to directly otherwise. Reaching out to employers via Twitter and LinkedIn gives you a way to get your name in front of someone and out of the stack of resumes they have to sift through. How closely you connect to potential employers on those networks however, has more to do with the network in question and how comfortable you are with it than anything else.

At the same time, with potential employers?asking candidates for their Facebook passwords, you have reason to be cautious. Mind you, that practice is?possibly illegal, definitely against Facebook's terms-of-service, and?Facebook is threatening legal action?against anyone who does it. It's possible they just want to see what you have behind the veil of your privacy settings, or maybe they really want to get to know the real you before extending an offer, to see if you fit in with the corporate culture. You're also right to be worried about what might happen if you're hired there ? maybe it's normal for everyone in that office to be Facebook friends, or to all follow the company's Twitter account. Let's take a look at these possibilities one at a time, then you can decide whether you want to click accept, or ignore.

The post-interview friend request
If the potential employer wants to be a Facebook friend, your situation is a rough one. My first instinct is to say, unless the interview went so well that your interviewer wants to be your friend personally, that they want to see your Facebook profile, but don't want to directly ask for your password. If the interviewer is especially malicious, he may be asking now to give you the impression that your future with that company may hang in the balance. You have every right ? and frankly, should ? say no here, and direct the interviewer instead to your LinkedIn profile. You mentioned they wanted to connect with you there ? respond by letting them know that your Facebook profile is for friends and personal acquaintances, and LinkedIn is for professional networking.?

If they don't care for that response, or claim (like one company I know) that it's company policy for everyone to be Facebook friends, then you have a choice to make. You can dangle it back in front of them and say you'd be willing to do that when or if you're hired, or you can walk away. Ultimately it depends on how sensitive you are to what your Facebook friends see, and how much you personally value that privacy. If we can offer a tip that's outside the principle of the matter, consider?setting up friends lists or groups?so?you have better control over who sees what. Then you can dump this person?and any other future coworkers?into a select group that sees little to nothing. The trouble is that you'll have to go back over past posts, photos, updates, and everything else to make sure their permissions are changed to exclude this new group. You'll have to decide whether that's more hassle than it's worth.

The post-hire friend request
The next ? and more common ? scenario you might encounter happens after you're on the job and you start getting friend requests from co-workers, your boss or even HR. At one company I worked for, our marketing department sent out an email to the whole organization to "let us know" that the company now had a Twitter account, and that we were "highly encouraged" to follow it, and to like their Facebook page while we were at it. This same company would regularly check on its employees to see if they were updating their LinkedIn accounts or publicly posting their resumes and reported those employees to their managers, warning that they may be looking for new jobs.

The big difference here is, of course, if you're good friends with your co-workers, you may have no trouble friending or following them on Facebook or Twitter. However, if your boss or HR suddenly sends you a friend request and you're not comfortable with it, there's no reason you should accept it unless you think it really is a friendly request and you're about to rebuff them for personal reasons. If that's the case, they should understand that you try to keep your work life and your personal life a little separate, but either way the situation calls for a little tact. Here are some tips:

  • Direct managers and HR to LinkedIn whenever possible. If your boss wants to connect with you professionally and does so by sending you a Facebook request, let them know your professional connections are at LinkedIn and give them your profile URL. Assuming, of course, you have a LinkedIn profile.
  • Are your co-workers really friends or just snooping? It's unlikely, but it is possible that your co-workers are just adding you in order to see what you're up to, especially in off hours. Be careful of co-workers and managers who use Facebook during the day to see whether?you?are using it during the day, when you should be working. If you're really friends with your co-workers, go ahead and add them. If not, it might be time to shunt them to LinkedIn.
  • Lock down your Facebook account. Using your Facebook profile to snag a job by?sprucing it up, adding a new photo, and updating your education and interests?is a great idea, but be ready to back it up if a company tries to connect with you. Lock down your past posts so only your real friends can see them?especially any times you were complaining about your old job. Then?add them to a list?where they only see things you're comfortable making public.
  • Use Facebook to your advantage. Create a friends list for professional contacts, and feed it accomplishments, certifications or other similar news. Even better, create a Facebook page for your "personal brand," which can serve as a Facebook-based resume. Then encourage the company or hiring manager to like?your?page to see your portfolio, accomplishments, and what you're working on professionally.

  • Clean Up Your Twitter account. The beauty ? and trouble ? with Twitter is that everything's either all public, or all hidden. I know more people who have found new jobs through Twitter than Facebook or even LinkedIn, but the only things you can do is go back in time and delete anything you think would be worrysome or be on your best behavior when you tweet. You have the option to take your account private, but then no one can see anything, and you're cut off from potential friends?and?employers ? but you will have your privacy.
  • Throw caution to the wind. There's always the option to just not care. You could just accept friend requests and Twitter followers and not bother to moderate yourself at all. There's some logic to the notion that any company that won't accept you for who you are, both in public and to your friends on Facebook or Twitter as well as LinkedIn, doesn't deserve you. It's idealistic, and most of us know there's a difference between our professional and personal lives (eg, check your political, religious and potentially disruptive views at the door), but speaking as someone who knows what it's like to work at a company where you have to keep even your benign interests and hobbies secret, it can be soul draining to have to be a different person at work than you are when you get home.?This XKCD comic sums it up pretty well.

The post-hire friend requests are harder to deal with, for obvious reasons, and you should take any direction you're most comfortable. Ultimately though, make sure you do what's comfortable, not what you think is expected. You'll have to deal with the consequences, and sometimes removing someone causes more hassle than not accepting their request in the first place.

The post-employment or pre-interview friend request
While far less common, friend requests from people you used to work with, or a company that's interested in, you are just as tricky. On the bright side, you're in the driver's seat in both cases, so you can decide whether you want to stay in touch with a colleague you used to work with on Facebook, or read their weekend activities on Twitter. You can research a company that wants to connect with you on LinkedIn or Facebook, and decide if you'd like to talk to them about what they have open.

Again, we'd advise caution with Facebook, just because it's such a tome of personal connections and information that you may not want public ? and make no mistake, friending a company or co-workers means that information is public, at least at the office ? but LinkedIn is always a good bet, as is Twitter, mostly because both are designed to be more public than private.

In the end, the network an employer wants to connect with you over makes much of the difference, as does your familiarity with that network's privacy tools. If you're already a master at custom friends lists at Facebook, and your status updates are set to post to a safe list by default, then you probably have no problem friending your boss. If not, or you don't want to tempt fate, it might just be better to apologize for any offense and suggest they head over to LinkedIn and connect with you there, instead.

While it's a little underhanded of your interviewer to dangle a potential job in front of you with a friend request attached, how you handle it ? even if you tell them Facebook is personal and LinkedIn is professional? may land you the gig. Good luck!

Lower death risk with heart bypass vs. angioplasty

CHICAGO (AP) ? Older patients with clogged heart arteries may have a little lower death risk over time if they get bypass operations instead of angioplasty and stents to fix the problem, new research suggests.

It's not the kind of study that gives conclusive evidence, but doctors say it gives a "real world" look at how people fare in ordinary practice. As such, it could tip the balance toward surgery for patients considering the choice, especially because research already shows bypass gives a better and longer lasting result for people with multiple blockages.

In a bypass operation, doctors move healthy blood vessels from other parts of the body to detour around clogged arteries supplying blood to the heart. Angioplasty treats the problem via a tube pushed through a blood vessel. A tiny balloon is inflated to flatten the clog and a mesh scaffold, a stent, is placed to prop the artery open.

Researchers compared these approaches using records on 190,000 Medicare patients with two or three blockages ? the largest study ever of this issue. Death rates were similar one year after either treatment. But after four years, nearly 21 percent of the angioplasty patients had died versus about 16 percent of those who had bypass surgery.

Results were discussed Tuesday at an American College of Cardiology conference in Chicago and published online by the New England Journal of Medicine.

In the United States, more than a million operations or procedures are done each year to treat clogged arteries, and the study "provides comprehensive, large-scale, national data" to help doctors and patients decide which treatment is best, Dr. Susan Shurin said in a statement. She is acting director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which sponsored the study.

Comparative effectiveness studies like this one are taking on greater importance as more attention turns to the cost of health care.

Researchers used databases kept by the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons on 86,244 people who had bypass surgery and 103,549 others who had angioplasty between 2004 and 2007. They used fancy statistical adjustments to try to compensate for differences in the groups that might affect the results.

They found bypass to give a survival advantage even when they considered factors such as sex, race, age, and conditions like diabetes.

"Everything lines up" in favor of surgery, said study leader Dr. William Weintraub of Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Del. "We were frankly surprised by that."

Still, researchers say differences in the overall health of people who had surgery versus the less drastic procedure could account for some of the results. They say angioplasty remains a good and safe option for many people.

"You're not making a mistake if you still have angioplasty," especially if you have only one or two blockages, said Dr. Kirk Garratt of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. He is a spokesman for the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions, doctors who do angioplasties.

There are tests to help decide whether one treatment will be better than another, but "in general, doctors do it intuitively" based on how frail patients look, how easily they walk across the room, how firmly they shake your hand, said Dr. Harlan Krumholz, a health outcomes research specialist at Yale University.

The new study "nudges you a little closer" to favoring bypass, but because of the caveats, "in the end, it says it is a close call," he said.

The fact bypass gives a longer-lasting result is a selling point ? it means fewer repeat procedures, said Dr. Michael Crawford, chief of clinical cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco.

"Some patients buy that and want to go for the long term. Others, it's a tough sell," he said.

The real message is how safe both procedures are, said Dr. Vince Bufalino of Advocate Health Care, a 100-doctor cardiology group that serves 10 hospitals in the Chicago area.

"We still think a traditional operation is excellent" for people with multiple blockages, said Bufalino, an American Heart Association spokesman.
