PayPal Lawsuit Against Google Reveals Recruiting Saga And A Deal Gone Sour

Google is making a bold play to enter mobile payments, and PayPal doesn't like it one bit. Shortly after Google announced its new mobile wallet for Android phones today, Paypal filed a lawsuit against Google and two former PayPal executives who now are in charge of mobile payments at Google (Osama Bedier and Stephanie Tilenius). The complaint (embedded below) alleges "misappropriation of trade secrets, and "breach of fiduciary duty." It revolves around Osama Bedier, who was the VP of Platform, Mobile, and New Ventures at PayPal before he was recruited to work at Google by Android chief Andy Rubin, Google co-founder Larry Page, and Bedier's former PayPal colleague Stephanie Tilenius (who now heads up Commerce and Payments at Google, and I interviewed yesterday onstage at Disrupt NYC). The lawsuit reveals that Google was negotiatiating with PayPal for two years to power payments on mobile devices. But just as the deal was about to be signed, Google backed off and instead hired the PayPal executive negotiating the deal?Bedier.

'Kung Fu Panda 2' Returns to Its Chinese Home

CHENGDU, China ? On the eve of its premiere in China, Kung Fu Panda 2?production designer Raymond Zibach hugged a panda-suited man in this southwest China city, demonstrated making bowls of local noodles and mugged for Chinese press cameras on a Paramount promotion tour on Wednesday.

Zibach, a California native and 15-year DreamWorks Animation veteran, was back in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, for the second time. His first 10-day trip to China in Nov. 2007 with director Jennifer Yuh Nelson and other key crew was to do the research they carefully and digitally plowed into the DWA sequel to the film that was a huge hit here in 2008 and a wake up call for local animators.

?I?m just so proud to be back to be able to say thank you to this magical place,? Zibach, 45, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, tired after leading reporters up Mt. Qing Cheng, the birthplace of Taoism (a Chinese philosophy) and the inspiration for much of KFP2?s lush green landscape.

Although it?s not allowed to be a distributor in China, where the China Film Group has a lock on the release of big imports, Paramount brought Zibach back to help push KFP2 because China?s box office in the last few years has become a key destination for big Hollywood films. Avatar, Inception and 2012 all grossed more from ticket sales in China than they did anywhere else outside the U.S.

At dinner, Zibach, who speaks no Chinese and doesn?t drink alcohol, sat next to Xiong Yan, a local Chinese Communist Party chief, toasted her with water and gave her an autographed book of the KFP2 art inspired by the beauty of Sichuan, China?s breadbasket and most populous province.

The Chinese characters for the famous mountain appear twice in the animated film, carved into rocks in the digital scenery inspired by locations sure to be recognized by local filmgoers.

?DreamWorks? promotion of Chengdu is much appreciated,? Xiong told Zibach through an interpreter supplied by New York public relations giant Ogilvy & Mather, whose Beijing office has consulted Chengdu on an image campaign since a deadly earthquake struck the area in 2008.

Kung Fu Panda 2, which releases in the U.S. Thursday, will bow in China on Saturday. The Chinese voice cast doesn?t include any famous talent ? no local Jack Black or Angelina Jolie equivalent -- an odd choice, perhaps, considering that Jackie Chan, one of China?s biggest stars, gives voice to Monkey in the English version.

?We?re not a distributor in China. That decision is made by the distributor [The China Film Group],? Chen Zhe, a Paramount representative, told reporters around a spicy local dinner of hot pot.

Hollywood?s lack of control over the way its films are released here highlights that China appears to have all but ignored a World Trade Organization ruling demanding greater foreign participation be allowed in the distribution of films.

Would Paramount -- if it had had a choice -- have hired famous Chinese voices to bring to life the hapless panda Po and his entourage of kick-ass animals?

?Sorry, I have no comment on that,? said Paramount?s Chen, apparently aware that crossing the China Film Group doesn?t pay in this booming market, where the box office gross was up 64% last year to $1.5 billion and is in the coming four years expected to overtake that of Japan, the world?s No. 2 movie market after the U.S.

The first Kung Fu Panda, released here in June 2008 in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics, was the first animated film to gross more than 100 million yuan ($15 million) at the local box office, quite an accomplishment in a market where animated fare has long been largely ignored by adults.

In the wake left by KFP1 the Chinese government raised support for and pressure on the homegrown animation industry to make better cartoon feature films. Although there?s been little buzz around it, the China Film Group is due to release a homegrown animated feature about pandas in the coming weeks, putting its product head to head with DWA?s toon.?

The Mojave Desert might be best known for its scorching sun and scary sidewinders, but the wind blows hard where the Mojave sands meet the Tehachapi Mountains in southern California, making it a great spot for wind turbines. It?s the site of the Alta Wind Energy Center (AWEC), which will generate 1,550 megawatts (MW) of energy when complete, making it one of the largest sites in the country for wind energy generation?enough to power 450,000 homes. Renewable energy developer Terra-Gen Power is constructing the site in several phases and we?ll provide $55 million to finance the 102 MW Alta IV project. Citibank, which has underwritten the equity for Alta Projects II-V, is also investing in this project.

We?re always looking for projects that are uniquely positioned to transform our energy sector. As part of the new 4,500 MW Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project (TRTP),?AWEC uses some of the first transmission lines developed specifically to transport renewable energy from remote, resource-rich areas (like the Mojave) to major population centers.

The Alta projects also employ an innovative financial structure called a leveraged lease, which has been used previously in the solar industry but has only recently become an option for wind projects. Under the leveraged lease, Google and Citi are purchasing the Alta IV project and will lease it back to Terra-Gen, who will manage and operate the wind projects under long-term agreements. We hope this structure encourages more investment by enabling other types of investors who might not typically consider wind projects.

The first five Alta projects are already operational, delivering 720 MW of energy to Southern California Edison, which will receive all 1,550 MW when completed, under a power purchase agreement signed with Terra-Gen in 2006. While Google won?t be purchasing the electricity from this project, AWEC will help California meet its ambitious renewable portfolio standard of 33 percent clean power by 2020. The whole site will boost California?s wind generation by 30 percent.

With this deal, we?ve now invested more than $400 million in the clean energy sector. We hope AWEC?s success, with its unique deal structure and renewable energy transmission, encourages more financing and development of renewables that will usher in a new energy future.

I find myself now in a place I swore I'd never be again, in a long distance relationship...kind of.? I have to wonder what makes me think that I can do the same thing I did before and expect a different result.? The answer is obvious, it's the girl.? There is so much more depth in my relationship with Abbi because we're so similar.? We see things the same way, we have similar tastes in movies, and we make fun of people similarly (kind of like Dr. Cox and Jordan from Scrubs).? Because of that, I have fun with Abbi regardless of what we do.? I pretty much hate going out and doing things in general, but I love it with Abbi because it's something we can explore together.

The level of conversation is something I've never had before in a relationship.? Abbi and I talk more than I have with any other girlfriend which does a great deal to minimize the impact of the distance.? I think that if you can become so enamored with a person's mind, then some of the physical fades away.

Because of these things, I have significantly more confidence in this relationship.? I think the strength is such that changing circumstances have little to no impact.? Somewhere deep down I knew that Samantha never really got me, and knew that if the relationship wasn't convenient, it didn't have much chance for success.? Certianly when she went off to college, everything fell to pieces and I was proven correct.? With Abbi convenience seems irrlevant.? There is more there than me simply taking solace in the fact that I have an attachment to someone.

And to put it bluntly, we're both awesome and I sincerely doubt either of us will find anyone more awesome than the other.? So there.
