Report: Kim K. gets $600K for New Year's gig

LOS ANGELES?? Detractors may slug New Year's Eve as "amateur night," but for celebs and the pop culture industry, it's a professional night on the clock.

While Jay-Z, Kanye West and Coldplay headlined the opening of the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas a year ago, one of the big draws this year is Kim Kardashian at TAO inside the Venetian.

TAO is paying the reality mogul $600,000 for a series of appearances beginning on New Year's Eve, according to multiple reports.

This year, Kardashian filmed several scenes for her E! reality show inside the club.

Having a good time on New Year's Eve doesn't come cheap -- for the bookers.

The average New Year's Eve fee for relevant talent is $100,000," Jack Colton, a Las Vegas nightlife expert and creator of the popular nightlife website JackColton.com, told TheWrap. "An A-List celebrity moves up to $250,000, and for a major grab can go as high as $1 million. Your Lady Gaga's and Jay-Zs would be considered major grabs," Colton said.

"It's a talent arms race, especially in bigger cities," added publicist Melissa Berger, whose clients include frequently booked "Dancing With the Stars" coach Karina Smirnoff.

"It's like 'Who are you' if you don't have someone like Deadmau5 on New Year's Eve," adds talent manager Mike Petolino.

Of course, it's not always about money. For some talent, like Kardashian, it's a question of performing in their favorite place. Breakout DJ and producer Kaskade told TheWrap at November's "Twilight" premiere that his favorite U.S. venue is Marquee (inside Las Vegas' Cosmopolitan). On Saturday night, he'll be commanding $250 a ticket for his performance there.

For other celebs, a highly promoted appearance is a professional calling card to corporate America. "When you go to Vegas, you want to be on the same radar as venues that have Jay-Z hosting the weekend after you," says Berger. "It sets a dynamic, and could even show brands and businesses that the talent is a good fit to be a part of their company."

Then there's the plain old visibility factor. Black Eyed Peas front woman Fergie, to quote one of her own songs, "just can't get enough." After a 2011 that included monster promotional appearances on the Super Bowl halftime show, "American Idol" and countless award shows, Fergie takes on one last gig as she opens the Las Vegas outpost of 1 OAK at the Mirage. In a two-for-one booking, husband Josh Duhamel is expected by her side.

Across the strip, Axl Rose and the latest incarnation of Guns 'N Roses will play the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

And coasting on his "Dancing With the Stars" fame, brother Rob Kardashian hosts at Tryst inside the Wynn, with ticket prices starting $175, lower than his sister's $225 opening price at TAO.

Even those who cover celebrity news are cashing in.

"Extra" host Mario Lopez plays hooky from L.A. outdoor mall "The Grove" (where he tapes "Extra") to headline "Big Bang NYE" at another outdoor mall complex, Hollywood and Highland.

Tom Cruise's son Connor, who's recently started accepting publicity heavy red carpet gigs as "DJ C-Squared," is a late addition to the performing talent at that L.A. bash.

As for the party patrons who shell out for the experience, it comes down to the Facebook effect -- sharing the experience in real-time or the day after online, a promotional windfall for all involved. "Even a picture from a distance or to hear a celeb you see in magazines speaking on the microphone, you can say 'I was there!"' says Berger.

FC Sion files criminal complaint against FIFA

SION, Switzerland - FC Sion says it has filed a criminal complaint against members of FIFA's executive committee over its threat to suspend Switzerland from world soccer

Sion said on its website Thursday that the threat made on Dec. 17 by soccer's ruling body amounts to unacceptable blackmail and a breach of basic legal rules.

FIFA said it wanted the Swiss national association to discipline Sion within one month over a long-running legal battle.

Sion is contesting its expulsion from the Europa League in September for fielding players signed during a FIFA transfer ban imposed in 2009.

If the suspension takes effect, FC Basel would be prevented from playing Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16. The first leg is scheduled Feb. 22.

Sony, Samsung dissolve panel joint venture

TOKYO (AP) -- Japan's Sony and South Korean rival Samsung are dissolving their joint venture in liquid crystal display panels as Sony tries to stanch years of losses in its TV business.

Sony Corp. said Monday that Samsung Electronics Co. will buy all of Sony's shares in the joint venture for about 1.08 trillion Korean won ($935 million) subject to a final agreement.

The joint venture called S-LCD was set up in 2004. Sony, which fell behind in flat panel TVs, invested in a Samsung panel factory to ensure a steady supply of panels for its LCD TVs.

Sony's TV operation has lost money for seven straight years and the company is straining to return that key business to profit.

The prices of TVs as well as panels have been dropping so it makes more sense to buy panels at the market rate than to invest in production.

Sony, which makes Bravia TV sets, does not make its own LCD panels.

It said it will enter a new partnership with Samsung to buy panels, and will also continue buying panels from other manufacturers.

Sony said it will suffer a loss of 66 billion yen ($846 million) for the third quarter of this fiscal year, which ends later this month, because of the declining value of investment in S-LCD.

Getting out the production venture will produce substantial savings after January 2012, when the deal is completed, according to Sony.

It was still unclear how Sony's profit forecast for the fiscal year through March 2012 will be affected, said company spokesman Takashi Uehara.

Raptors coach Casey quietly in command

There are times when you almost have to strain to hear Dwane Casey speak ? the Raptors coach is not one prone to raising his voice to make loud pronouncements or hammer home a point.

It speaks to a quiet confidence in the 54-year-old, a feeling that he can earn respect in his own soft-spoken manner, that it will come to him because of the way he is, not the way others may want him to be.

But make no mistake, under that quiet outer demeanour lies a man who can make a point forcefully simply by the nature of his personality; if he wants you to know something, he can get it done with no histrionics.

?Guys know when he talks, no matter the tone of the voice, he?s serious about it,? said veteran Raptors guard Anthony Carter, the only player on the Toronto team with first-hand knowledge of Casey as a head coach from the time the two were together in Minnesota in 2005.

?I think that right there is what he established his first day here, letting guys know he might talk soft but you?ve got to get the job done.?

Casey begins his second tenure as an NBA head coach Monday night in Cleveland as the Raptors take on the Cavaliers to begin a 66-game sprint of a regular season.

He has had precious little time to truly get to know his personnel ? a short training camp, an even shorter pre-season ? or to truly put his stamp on the organization.

But even in that relatively short period, one verdict is already in: the players appreciate the way he handles them, the way he conveys his message, the professionalism he?s trying to instill.

?I think he?s great,? said backup guard Jerryd Bayless. ?I can?t speak highly enough about him. He brings a certain focus that we didn?t have last year; his philosophy on defence and offence are both things that win games.

?I couldn?t be happier to be playing for him and I hope I?m playing for him for a very long time.?

One of Casey?s watchwords throughout the pre-season has been ?accountability.? He wants everyone to know there will be repercussions for repeated transgressions, that he is willing to teach and cajole and work with players on whatever they want, but they need to take responsibility for improvement or suffer the consequences.

?It?s making sure we do the little things, no matter whether it?s the top guy on the team or the bottom guy on the team,? Casey said. ?Being where they?re supposed to be, paying attention to detail.

?I think that?s one of the major changes; doesn?t matter who it is, if you don?t do it, you?re held accountable. Whether it?s get on the line and run or we do it over or be called out. (It?s) making sure everybody does their job, that?s the most important thing.?

The players don?t seem to mind, yet.

?Now he?s more precise with whatever he says, he?s not going back on his word,? said Carter. ?He won?t tell you one thing and then probably do another. He?ll tell a guy straight up front, if you ain?t doing your job, you?re going to sit over there. He?s not going to babysit you or anything.

?Right there is when you earn everybody?s respect, by treating everybody the same. I think that?s what he?s been doing. If you ain?t getting it done, you?re going to sit down.?

It?s a message delivered in typically understated Casey fashion.

?I?m not a tyrant, there?s no question,? he said. ?It?s a situation where you?re making sure guys do their jobs and it?s all about winning and it?s not about self-satisfaction or doing it my way or the highway or anything like that.

?It?s about building a program that?s going to last.?

Riot Police Fire Tear Gas At Protesters In Chinese Seaside Town Of Haimen

In response to the protests, the local government said Tuesday that it would temporarily suspend the power plant project, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

But protesters say they have not heard directly from authorities on the matter and say several protesters in their teens or early 20s had been detained.

Many of the protesters waved red plastic bags meant to signify red scarves worn by children as part of their school uniforms, photos from the scene showed.

They held up banners saying "Release the people", ''Defend our home" and "Oppose construction of power plant".

It was not immediately clear how many people have been taken into police custody, but Xinhua said Thursday that five people had been detained by Wednesday for vandalism during the protests.

Earlier in the day, police fired tear gas at the protesters, said another protester, a man surnamed Lin.

"When they saw that more and more people had come to protest, they fired the tear gas to try to chase us away. At the same time, a big gust of wind blew toward us, so we all had to run," Lin said. "My tears ran continuously. Our eyes are all red."

This is the third time police have used tear gas to disperse protesters in Haimen this week.

"We have no weapons at all. All we are doing is standing here and protesting," Lin added.

Hong Kong's Cable TV showed footage of tear gas clouds being blown toward protesters, scattering the crowd of hundreds of people. Riot police with helmets and shields had formed a blockade at the entrance to the highway.

After three decades of laxly regulated industrialization, China is seeing a surge in protests over such environmental worries.

In September, hundreds of villagers in an eastern Chinese city near Shanghai demonstrated against pollution they blamed on a solar panel factory. In August, 12,000 residents in the northeastern port city of Dalian protested against a chemical plant after waves from a tropical storm broke a dike guarding the plant and raised fears that flood waters could release toxic chemicals.

Is Gremlins 3 in the Works?

Exclusive : Has Warner decided to do Gremlins 3!?

Something tells me those mischievous, scantily-dressed midnight snackers ~~The Kardashians~~ the Gremlins will be back before a Green Screen in the coming months.

If a domain renewal is anything to go by, ?Gremlins 3? could be creeping up on us.

Seems Warner Bros renewed Gremlins3.com last week, a domain they?ve owned since 2009.

Now that doesn?t mean the film is definitely happening, but it does suggest that for the past few years the water tower gang have been seriously considering putting Gizmo back on the front-line. And if I had to guess, I?d say the domain renewal reiterates their interest in doing a new ?Gremlins? film.

When will it happen? Anyone?s guess, but with strong brand name franchises like ?Mission : Impossible?, ?The Muppets? and ?Transformers? eating up large chunks of the multiplex receipts of late, I wouldn?t at all be surprised to discover it?s clandestinely in-development as we speak.

(The same date Warner Bros also renewed their registration for the still-possible ?Green Lantern? sequel at GreenLantern2.com and the inevitable ?Hangover 3? with TheHangover3.com.)

There?s a number of other rumoured Warner Bros sequels/prequels that the studio haven?t reserved domain names for ? i.e ?Blade Runner 2?, ?Lost Boys 4?, ?Police Academy 8?, ?Lethal Weapon 5?, ?The Goonies 2?- so it?d seem the studio isn?t in the business of ?buying up all the domains for possible future product?. Everything url-wise they?ve snapped up has either been announced or is in development by looks.

I dropped a contact at Warner Bros a line (the same contact who) about the ?Gremlins 3? find and whilst they said they?ve ?heard things? they had nothing solid to fill a return email with.

?Gremlins? director Joe Dante told us last year that he didn?t expect Warner Bros to call him with a request to shepherd a second sequel to his 1984 hit ? but he did expect the studio would soon do something with the property.

Here?s what Dante, who had a falling out with the studio a couple of years back, said :

I?m constantly asked ?why the hold up on Gremlins 3? And that?s because those films were such products of the technology at the time. The movie was more limited and created by technology. They were puppets. The storylines, then, were based around what we could do with the Gremlins. Now, of course, anything is possible but it becomes a little more difficult to hone it on what your storyline would be. First of all, I won?t be asked. Second of all, I wouldn?t bring back the original cast because it?s been too long ? the kids now would be familiar with the title, and familiar with Gizmo and Stripe, but as far as the actual [live-action] characters and story, they don?t know them.. it.

Dante?s probably correct about the original cast not being involved ? can?t imagine Warner would bother with Zach Gallighan and Phoebe Cates; they?d go for more noteworthy names ? and it?s a certainty that it?d be CGI now.

Again, no guarantee a third ?Gremlins? will happen, but seems it?s definitely something Warner are looking at. And that?s cool with me. Heck, I?m happy to know that if a new ?Ghostbusters? doesn?t happen, which quite frankly, I?m not convinced will happen, we might see that other 1984 franchise get a reprise.

Anyone keen for another ?Gremlins??

WEST HOLLYWOOD, California (AP) ? The rapper known as "Tyler, the Creator," has been arrested after authorities say he got rowdy after a show at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood.

Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Arthur Famble Jr. says the rapper was arrested Thursday night after he destroyed the Sunset Strip nightclub's electronic soundboard.

The 20-year-old, whose real name is Tyler Gregory Okonma, was booked for investigation of felony vandalism and released on $20,000 bail.

The sergeant says that as the rapper was being led to a squad car, the crowd leaving the Roxy became angry and additional deputies were called in to disperse the crowd.

No one was hurt.

Telephone numbers for Okonma and his record company couldn't be found. Okonma says in a Twitter message that he wasn't arrested.
