NEW YORK ? Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch says President Barack Obama's speech to the United Nations opposing the Palestinians' bid for statehood has satisfied his concerns and he'll now support his re-election.

The Democratic ex-mayor says he will tell Jewish voters that Obama deserves their vote.

The Times says Koch announced his change of heart in a weekly email to supporters.

In the message, he says Obama deserves praise for intervening to protect Israeli diplomats in Cairo and for providing Israel with military equipment and cooperation "far exceeding his predecessors."

The Obama campaign didn't respond to a request for comment.

ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Pakistan warned the United States it risks losing an ally if it continued to accuse Islamabad of playing a double game in the war against militancy, escalating the crisis in relations between the two countries.

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar was responding to comments by U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, who said Pakistan's top spy agency was closely tied to the Haqqani network, the most violent and effective faction among Islamic Taliban militants in Afghanistan.

It is the most serious allegation levelled by the United States against nuclear-armed and Muslim-majority Pakistan since they began an alliance in the war on terror a decade ago.

"You will lose an ally," Khar told Geo TV in New York in remarks broadcast on Friday.

"You cannot afford to alienate Pakistan, you cannot afford to alienate the Pakistani people. If you are choosing to do so and if they are choosing to do so it will be at their (the United States') own cost."

Mullen, speaking in Senate testimony, alleged Haqqani operatives launched an attack last week on the U.S. embassy in Kabul with the support of Pakistan's military intelligence.

The tensions could have repercussions across Asia, from India, Pakistan's economically booming arch-rival, to China, which has edged closer to Pakistan in recent years.

A complete break between the United States and Pakistan -- sometimes friends, often adversaries -- seems unlikely, if only because Washington depends on Pakistan as a route to supply U.S. troops fighting militants in Afghanistan, and as a base for unmanned U.S. drones.

Pakistan relies on Washington for military and economic aid and for acting as a backer on the world stage.

But support in the U.S. Congress for curbing assistance or making conditions on aid more stringent is rising rapidly.

The unilateral U.S. Navy SEALs raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in May took already fragile relations between Pakistan and the United States to a low.

Relations were just starting to recover before the Kabul attack. Both sides are now engaged in an unusually blunt public war of words.

The dangers could be enormous if Washington fails to arrest the deterioration in relations with Pakistan, a largely dysfunctional state run by a feckless, military-cowed government and teeming with Islamist militants.

At stake are the fight against terrorism, the security of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal and - as Islamabad plays off its friendship with China against the United States - regional stability.

"Anything which is said about an ally, about a partner, publicly to recriminate it, to humiliate it, is not acceptable," said Khar.

The United States has long pressed Pakistan to go after the Haqqani network, which it believes operates from sanctuaries in North Waziristan on the Afghan border.

Pakistan says its army is too stretched fighting its own Taliban insurgency. But analysts say the Islamabad government regards the Haqqanis as a strategic counterweight to the growing influence of old rival India in Afghanistan.

The Haqqani network, Mullen said, is a "veritable arm" of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI).

The charges come amid mounting exasperation in Washington as the Obama administration struggles to curb militancy in Pakistan and end the long war in Afghanistan.

Mullen, CIA director David Petraeus and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton all have met with their Pakistani counterparts in recent days to demand Islamabad take action against the Haqqani network.

Any Pakistani offensive against the Haqqanis would be risky. The group has an estimated 10,000-15,000 seasoned fighters at its disposal and analysts say the Pakistani army would likely suffer heavy casualties.

Perry rivals work to undercut his character (AP)

WASHINGTON ? United on the economic issues that most worry voters, the Republican presidential candidates have turned to subjects like vaccines, immigration and the future of Social Security. And while there are some policy differences, Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann and others are raising those topics partly to make character arguments against GOP front-runner Rick Perry.

Over the past week, Romney has said Perry's rhetoric on Social Security "scared seniors" and is "frightening." Bachmann has argued that the Texas governor's vaccine proposal would have forced "innocent little 12-year-old girls" to have "a government injection." And Perry has defended Texas allowing undocumented immigrants to get in-state college tuition by suggesting that his rivals are un-American.

Such sparring previews a GOP presidential debate Thursday in Florida.

Every election year, voters pine for a contest that allows them to hear a serious discussion about issues and to choose among candidates with sharp policy differences. But they don't usually get it in presidential primaries.

Candidates competing for their party's nomination are often so in sync on major policy issues that they resort to character criticisms to differentiate themselves from their opponents. And even when there are exceptions, the contest still usually becomes a fight over experience, personality, judgment and ultimately character.

Barack Obama's opposition to the Iraq war and Hillary Rodham Clinton's vote to authorize military force in Iraq became a flash point in the 2008 Democratic primary campaign. A policy difference, sure. But Obama also used the issue to question Clinton's judgment, arguing that she allowed a misguided military mission championed by Republican President George W. Bush based on faulty intelligence. And Obama cast himself as a leader with a backbone, arguing that he took a risk by opposing the intervention since it was very popular at the time.

Four years later, character attacks are again showing up in a presidential primary as policy differences in disguise.

That's partly because Perry is relying on character as a fundamental argument for his candidacy. He is portraying himself as an authentic straight-shooter who says what he believes regardless of political circumstances. It's an effort to contrast himself with Romney, who has been labeled a flip-flopper for reversing himself on some positions and who has struggled to connect with voters.

As Dave Carney, Perry's top strategist, said in a recent interview: "We are consciously running this campaign to be: We're saying the same things today that we're going to say in October 2012."

There's another reason why Perry's rivals are trying to poke holes in his character: the Republican candidates broadly agree that smaller government, fewer regulations, lower taxes are the solutions to fixing a sluggish economy and an unemployment rate hovering around 9 percent. Those are the central issues driving the 2012 election.

"It leaves you to wrangle about smaller stuff, and so that's why you see these fights on the vaccine, immigration, which is not exactly the hottest issue in the country right now, and those debates are about character," said veteran GOP strategist Alex Castellanos.

Sure, Romney and Perry have sparred over just who better managed their state's economy as governor and who created more jobs. Yes, Bachmann supporters have run ads using Perry's record in Texas to accuse him of inflating government spending.

But aside from those arguments, Perry's rivals have turned to more emotionally charged issues as ways try to draw distinctions with the Texas governor.

The latest example came Wednesday in Florida as the Romney and Perry campaigns accused each other of trying to scare Florida seniors who depend on Social Security.

In his book "Fed Up," Perry suggested states should have some say in how it is managed. Romney says he rejects letting states control the program in "any way, shape or form."

Romney's campaign sent out a list of questions about where Perry stood on Social Security and cast Perry as just too risky to support.

"Voters will have the opportunity to choose between Mitt Romney, who wants to fix and strengthen Social Security for the next generation, and Rick Perry, who wants to dismantle it," said Romney aide Gail Gitcho.

Perry's campaign hit back and raised questions about Romney's truthfulness.

"Now Mr. Romney is again sounding like a Democrat, distorting the truth and trying to scare senior citizens," said Perry spokesman Ray Sullivan. "As he has so many times in the past, Mr. Romney seems to forget he's a Republican."

Perry and his rivals also have tussled over immigration. Perry signed a Texas law allowing undocumented immigrants to receive in-state tuition at Texas universities, while Romney vetoed a similar bill in Massachusetts. Bachmann opposes a federal version of a similar law. Charges of being un-American have flown.

"The bottom line is it doesn't make any difference what the sound of your last name is. That is the American way," Perry said last week, defending his decision.

"I think that the American way is not to give taxpayer subsidized benefits to people who have broken our laws or who are here in the United States illegally," Bachmann snapped back.

She also is seeking to undercut Perry's claims to be an authentic conservative by assailing his decision to sign an executive order mandating that sixth-grade girls receive an inoculation for human papillomavirus, or HPV, a sexually transmitted infection that can cause cervical cancer.

Bachmann disagrees with the policy position included in the executive order. But the inherent message in her criticism is this: Perry says one thing and does another.

The Texas governor has tried to clear up the situation, saying during last week's debate: "It was very clear. It had an opt-out." But then he told reporters in Virginia a few days later that the vaccine "should have had an opt-in instead of an opt-out."

Some Republicans have pointed to those comments as evidence Perry has flip-flopped.

"Talk about a complete reversal on an issue," Iowa social conservative commentator Craig Robinson wrote this month on his website, TheIowaRepublican.com. "While numerous candidates are raising valid questions about this issue, what the debate over Perry's HPV mandate has really done is brought in to question Perry's character and convictions."

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? The U.S. ambassador to Libya expressed confidence in the country's new rulers Thursday as the American Embassy reopened in the capital months after it closed down during the fighting to oust Moammar Gadhafi.

Ambassador Gene Cretz acknowledged the North African nation faces many challenges as Gadhafi remains on the run and fighting with his loyalists continues on three fronts.

"The next few months will be critical as Libyans lay the groundwork for a pluralistic democracy that respects the rights of all of its citizens," he said in remarks before the flag was raised in front of his residence in Tripoli, which will serve as the interim embassy. "The United States and the international community are ready to help in any way we can."

The ceremony occurred on the same day that Tunisian authorities jailed Libya's ex-prime minister, Al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi, on charges of illegal entry after he was found without a visa as he was trying to flee across the border to Algeria. Libya's transitional government said it would ask Tunisia to send al-Mahmoudi home to face justice.

Cretz said Gadhafi and his supporters would eventually be routed, but the National Transitional Council would not wait to move forward with efforts to form a new government.

"It's a question of time before Gadhafi and his remaining loyalists are finished off," he said.

The American Embassy's main compound was attacked and severely damaged by a pro-Gadhafi mob after an airstrike in May. Embassy staff had already been evacuated as unrest spread after the start of the uprising in mid-February.

For Cretz, it was a personal victory to be back in Libya.

The Albany, New York native had left the country for consultations in Washington in January after WikiLeaks posted his opinions of Gadhafi's personal life and habits, such as his love of flamenco dancing and his reliance on a Ukrainian nurse, in a classified 2009 diplomatic cable.

The ambassador, who returned to the country on Wednesday, said he had been physically threatened because of outrage over the document.

"At that time, I could not imagine that I would be returning to a new, free Libya that is brimming with joy, optimism and newfound freedoms," he said.

Despite the optimism, he expressed concern about the influence of Islamists in the country but said that so far, they had expressed a moderate platform.

Cretz also said the Americans were worried about the proliferation of weapons that were missing from Gadhafi's once vast arsenal. In particular, the U.S. has sought to keep track of Libya's unconventional weapons experts during the civil war.

Gadhafi agreed to dismantle his weapons of mass destruction research and production programs as part of efforts to normalize relations with the international community as he faced intense economic pressure from international sanctions. But he never completed the process.

A U.N. official said Libyans had found uranium yellowcake, partly refined uranium ore, that was left over from the former regime's nuclear program, in a southern area. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information, said the material was "slightly radioactive" but posed no immediate danger. He didn't know how much had been found.

The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that yellowcake is stored in drums at a site near Sabha, which had been disclosed to the nuclear watchdog. The IAEA has tentatively scheduled safeguard activities at this location once the situation in the country stabilizes, according to spokeswoman Gill Tudor.

Also Thursday, fighters from Misrata said in a statement that they are in control of chemical weapons near Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte ? one of the three areas where loyalists continue to put up stiff resistance. They said they are safeguarding any possible chemical weapons until the arrival of a U.N. team, which will oversee their transfer.

"We are looking for a peaceful country and we don't want these kinds of weapons to stay in it," the statement said.

Libya's new rulers are struggling to consolidate their control over the entire country a month after revolutionary forces seized control of the capital, Tripoli, and brought down Gadhafi's regime. There is concern that as long as Gadhafi and other top regime figures are not captured, they could cause significant instability.

Al-Mahmoudi was arrested overnight when he and two other people were found without visas in the southern Tunisia town of Tameghza as they were trying to flee into Algeria, authorities said.

The three were questioned by the state prosecutor and sentenced in court to six months in prison for illegal entry, according to Tunisia's Justice Ministry spokesman Kadhem Zine El Abidine.

Al-Mahmoudi is not among the former Gadhafi allies being sought by the International Criminal Court, but the Libyans said he was wanted for financial corruption and other crimes.

The transitional government planned to ask Tunisia to send al-Mahmoudi back to Libya to face justice, spokesman Jalal el-Gallal said. He declined to outline specific allegations against the former prime minister. "When we have him here in Libya, we will file the charges and he will be tried," el-Gallal said.

Lt. Gen. Charles Bouchard said in a conference call with reporters that many Gadhafi forces are surrounded with no way out and lack the capacity to coordinate actions. On Wednesday, NATO's decision-making body, the North Atlantic Council, granted approval to extend the mission for another 90 days. Without an extension, permission for the operation would have expired Sept. 27.

Government forces this week have made inroads against Gadhafi loyalists in southern strongholds, including Sabha, the last major city in Libya's far south on a key road leading to the border with Niger. Several convoys of Gadhafi loyalists and forces, as well as one of his sons. have escaped into Niger.

"Well, I don't think there are too many places left in Libya for regime forces to go," Bouchard said. "What we are now witnessing is tactical, very localized action."

Tailored breast cancer drugs in focus at cancer meet (Reuters)

ZURICH (Reuters) ? Doctors and investors at a cancer conference starting on Friday will be keen to find out more on the effectiveness of two promising new breast cancer drugs from Swiss drugmakers Roche and Novartis.

Roche's T-DM1 and Novartis's Afinitor have been designed to treat two specific types of breast cancer and are among the latest examples of the tailored therapies increasingly being used in oncology.

A mid-stage trial has already shown recently that T-DM1, which combines Roche's Herceptin with a potent cell-killing payload delivered directly to cancer cells, helped patients live longer without their disease getting worse compared with those taking Herceptin and conventional chemotherapy.

It also showed that T-DM1 had fewer side effects. Investors will eye the more detailed data sets to see the size of the benefit and whether the reduced side effects increased patients' likelihood of sticking with the treatment.

Roche and Novartis, the top two global players in oncology, are due to present more detailed data on their drugs at the EMCC European cancer congress, which runs from September 23-27 in Stockholm.

"We have further data at the next cancer conference, and we believe they are quite astounding," Stefan Frings, Global Head of Medical Affairs Oncology at Roche, told Reuters at the group's headquarters in Basel.

Roche hopes the T-DM1 results will help it protect its multibillion-dollar Herceptin franchise even as Herceptin loses exclusivity in the coming years.

T-DM1, which Roche is developing with Immunogen, is a new kind of "armed antibody."

The fact that the drug delivers its toxic payload directly into cells is thought to be key to why it causes fewer cases of common chemotherapy side effects such as hair loss and low white blood cell counts.

"For T-DM1 we want to know more about the extent of those benefits as that ultimately has an impact on the pricing issue, which is important for Roche as they seek to combine more products to treat breast cancer," Helvea analyst Karl-Heinz Koch said.

Novartis has also sounded an upbeat note about the prospects for Afinitor, also known as everolimus, which is already approved for other types of cancer, such as kidney and a rare type of pancreatic cancer.

CEO Joe Jimenez told Reuters in a recent interview it could generate sales of at least $1 billion if it makes it to the market for patients with hormone-sensitive breast cancer. It is planning to file for regulatory approval by the end of 2012.

The interim analysis of a late-stage trial showed Afinitor taken with Pfizer's oestrogen-blocker Aromasin, also known as exemestane, extended the time patients lived without their tumor growing.

More details from the BOLERO-2 study will be presented in Stockholm.

Novartis is seeking to use Afinitor, which works by targeting the protein mTOR in cancer cells, to treat women with hormonal receptor-positive breast cancer who have not responded to initial hormonal therapy.

"After around 25 years of hormonal therapy for this type of patient population, this study represents a really innovative therapy that is a step forward for this group of patients with breast cancer," Alessandro Riva, Global Head of Oncology Development and Medical Affairs at Novartis, told Reuters.

Worldwide, there are approximately 220,000 newly diagnosed cases of ER+HER2- advanced breast cancer each year that could benefit from Afinitor, Riva said, adding the drug was well tolerated and can be taken over a prolonged period.

"The breast cancer story is a very nice journey for everolimus," Riva said. "The journey is not finished because we have a large program now ongoing in the HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer patients."

TAKING AIM

Targeted therapies are treatments that use drugs to identify and attack specific cancer cells without harming normal cells. Monoclonal antibodies, such as Herceptin, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors, such as GlaxoSmithKline's Tykerb, are two types of targeted therapies used in breast cancer.

Roche first broke ground in this field just over a decade ago with Herceptin, which was designed to treat women with breast cancer who make too much of the HER2 protein. About 20 percent of breast cancer patients have these particularly aggressive types of tumors.

It is now also developing pertuzumab, another medication for women with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer, which it is ultimately hoping to use with T-DM1 to attack the cancer on several different fronts.

Roche is planning to file for approval of pertuzumab this year after positive results from a late-stage trial.

Roche's and Novartis's bid to combine treatments comes as scientists increasingly understand that cancer cells are able to keep growing by finding ways to outmaneuver treatments, so using a cocktail of drugs could be key to the fight.

AFINITOR VS AVASTIN

Afinitor may also be able to capitalize on the recent woes of another of Roche's cancer drugs, Avastin, which was once tipped to become the world's best-selling drug.

U.S. authorities proposed revoking its approval in advanced breast cancer at the end of last year, a decision that dented sales of Avastin in breast cancer on both sides of the Atlantic.

A few months later, advisers to the Food and Drug Administration agreed that the drug was not safe or clinically beneficial, dealing a blow to Roche and also to those patients who had insisted it had saved their lives.

"Afinitor could bring in at least $1.5 billion in sales in the second line HER2-advanced breast cancer setting, and if Novartis could extend use to the first line as well, sales could increase to around $4 or $5 billion," Helvea's Koch said.

"The only competition out there at the moment is Avastin, but it has been knocked off its throne in the United States and also to a large extent in Europe," Koch said.

Music Review: Original Cast Recording - Godspell 40th Anniversary ...

Godspell. What do you think of when you hear that? For most people, it brings to mind one of the most well known musicals ever. The show reenacts the Sermon on the Mount from the Book of Matthew, but with modern style. Considering the 40th Anniversary Celebration CD of Godspell has just been released, plenty of audiences have enjoyed it as well.

1971 marks the year when Stephen Schwartz composed the show's score. Godspell would eventually become an Off Broadway production after overf a month's worth of rehearsals.

In a wise move, the packet includes both the Original Cast Recording from the theatrical production as well as the Original Motion Soundtrack. Although the setup is the same in both versions, there are differences. For example, the cast varies greatly. Only a handful of actors who performed the show on stage ended up in the film. Alias and Glee fans will recognize Victor Garber as Jesus in the movie. Also, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? alum Lynne Thigpen is part of the film cast. Unfortunately, Thigpen died a while back.

The song lists, while agreeing for the most part, have slight differences. "We Beseech Thee," written specifically for the stage, is a bouncy and playful sung adeptly by Jeffrey Mylett. Listeners will tap their toes along with every well-delivered note. On the other hand, "Beautiful City" replaces this selection in the film adaptation. The latter isn't bad, although the piano helps.

"Bless The Lord" is probably my favorite song. Whether it is Thigpen or Joanne Jonas who opens this, each woman has a solid set of pipes. The rising crescendos are perfectly mastered.

Garber solos twice for the film. "Save The People" is the softer number. Plaintive and haunting, it is in sharp contrast tto "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord," which opens the performance and introduces the audience to the cast. To get an idea of just how versatile Garber is, "Alas For You," featured in the second half of the movie, comes off with more of a baritone range than the previous gentle and quiet tenor used towards the opening of the movie. This is my least favorite, but it has more to do with personal preference than Garber's vocal abilities.

While there is a religious overtone throughout the production, anyone can find something to remember by the time it's all over. Plenty of songs are fun, catchy tunes. A few are darker, particularly towards the end.
