Lambros Fotos made no secret of his excitement over being named
head wrestling coach Monday at United Township, where he won a
145-pound state championship as a Panthers senior in 2002.

?I?d rather be nowhere else on the planet,? Fotos said. ?I?ve
always been a UT Panther. Nothing would please me more to bring
back a Western Big Six title and individual state medals, and
hopefully team state medals in the future.?

Fotos wrestled at the University of Illinois, completing a history
degree in 2007. He has since been working at UT as a social studies
teacher, while assisting in the football and wrestling
programs.

?Lambros brings intensity and passion to this position,? UT
athletic director Mike Tracey said in a press release. ?As an
athlete at UT, Lambros never stopped working to improve. His mental
and physical toughness as a competitor will be evident in the
philosophy he will instill in our wrestling program.?

Fotos, the 2002 Quad-City Times Salute to Sports Male Athlete of
the Year, takes over a Panthers team that sent outgoing senior
Chuck Lueth to the state tournament at 171 pounds. It?s not a large
group of seniors returning, so Fotos has some rebuilding ahead of
him.

?We?re basically starting from the ground up, but there?s a lot of
potential,? Fotos said. ?Basically with the kids that we have, in
order to be successful, it will have to come from purely hard work.
We?ll need a certain level of intensity to get to that point.?
