Thousands of people remained in evacuation centres on the main island of Luzon, disaster relief officials said Sunday, after Tropical Storm Meari dumped heavy rains that caused flash floods in Manila and surrounding provinces.

Meari left one person dead, and rescuers were still looking for 17 people who went missing, including a group of fishermen who set sail despite the bad weather.

Indian activist Anna Hazare has threatened to resume a hunger strike after talks with the government over an anti-corruption law have hit an impasse.

The government has reportedly refused to include the prime minister and senior judiciary under the ombudsman.

However, a government minister said it was committed to draft a "strong and sound" Jan Lokpal Bill (Citizen's Ombudsman Bill) by the end of June.

Mr Hazare said that the government had "no intention of bringing in an effective Lokpal Bill and it backtracked yesterday on the promise to consider our suggestions, so I have resume my fast from 16 August".

The government hit back saying civil society representatives "cannot threaten and negotiate at the same time".

"This is not the way forward. The government is not going to get diverted by abuses and slander," Telecommunications Minister Kapil Sibal said.

After seven meetings with the government, civil society members said on Wednesday that the government "wants to kill the Lokpal Bill before it was born".

The two sides are expected to meet on 20 and 21 June in what will be their last meetings.

A hunger strike by Mr Hazare in April heaped pressure on the government, which is beset by corruption scandals.

Some of the recent corruption scandals to have rocked India include a multi-billion dollar alleged telecoms scam, alleged financial malpractices in connection with the Commonwealth Games, which India hosted, and allegations that houses for war widows were diverted to civil servants.

Critics of the government say that recent scandals point to a pervasive culture of corruption in Mr Singh's administration - adding to the difficulties of a politician once seen as India's most honest.

A recent survey said corruption in India cost billions of dollars and threatened to derail growth.

8 dead after gunmen storm Iraq gov't building (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Attackers set off two car bombs next to a government compound Tuesday, then opened fire and took an unknown number of hostages, Iraqi officials said. Eight people were killed in the assault.

There were conflicting reports about whether the situation had been brought under control in Baqouba, which was once an al-Qaida in Iraq stronghold. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the complex attack bore the hallmarks of the insurgent group.

Gunmen first set off two car bombs near a gate protecting the government compound in Baqouba, 35 miles (60 kilometers) northeast of Baghdad, said Samira al-Shibli, a spokeswoman for the Diyala provincial council. The compound houses buildings including the provincial council headquarters and the governor's office.

Two officials with the Diyala Operations Command said at least some of the gunmen made their way into the compound and one of the officials said the gunmen took hostages. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

An Iraqi army officer, Col. Sabah al-Kuzi, said eight people died in the assault but he did not know how many of the attackers were among the dead.

One of the officials at the Diyala Operations Command said there were five gunmen: three were killed, one wounded and authorities were still searching for the fifth.

However, a member of the Diyala provincial council said 10 gunmen had stormed into the compound.

"I am trying to call my colleagues and employees in the building but all their mobiles are switched off," Nasreen Bahjat said. "The situation now is tense."

Another council member, Zainab al-Sufi, described a chaotic situation where the assailants armed with machine guns randomly opened fire after the bombs went off. They clashed with security forces and killing some civilians before storming into the compound, al-Sufi said.

Abdullah Hassan, a provincial council member, said the gunmen may have intended to target a council meeting scheduled for Tuesday morning. But the meeting was delayed and no council members were there when the attack happened.

"The aim of such attack is to create more chaos and to hinder any attempts to push the country forward," he said.

In March, gunmen wearing military uniforms over explosives belts charged into a government building in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit in an attack that left 56 people dead. The five-hour standoff ended only when the attackers blew themselves up in one of the bloodiest days in Iraq this year.

Generate More B2B Sales With Lead Nurturing and the Human Touch

Last month I participated in a webinar on Adding the Human Touch into Your Lead Nurturing with Brian Carroll, author of Lead Generation for the Complex Sale and the ?godfather? of lead nurturing. We received a ton of questions after the presentation ? so many that we didn?t have time to get to all of them, so I wanted to address several of them here.

Q: What marketing metric(s) should I use to capture lead nurturing effectiveness? How do you overcome those who claim they ?would have bought the product anyway without nurturing??

The first measurement is the percentage of qualified prospects you are nurturing that move to leads or pipeline in any given period (especially compared to the percentage that go inactive). The bigger your percentage, the better your nurturing is performing.

You?re always meeting and adding new people to your pipeline, but nurturing refers specifically to those already in your database. Of that group, some should raise their hands every month (or whatever time period is most appropriate to your buying cycle) and say, ?now I?m ready to engage with sales.?

Of course, the only way you can truly measure the impact of your nurturing is to conduct an A/B test where you split your leads into two groups and nurture one group and not the other. The conversion rates of each respective group will help you persuade those who claim nurturing doesn?t significantly alter the buying process. At Marketo, our prospect-to-lead conversion rate triples with lead nurturing. We generate leads from 20% of the qualified prospects we nurture in any given 12-month period, but only 6.5% from those we do not.

It?s important to note that it?s a lead nurturing best practice not to compare your results against my number specifically, as they heavily depend on your organization?s unique definitions of a lead versus a prospect. What matters is the relative difference between these two groups.

Q. Do you ever pass a lead to Sales if it is an interested influencer instead of a direct economic buyer?

At most organizations, the answer is absolutely yes. If you have a qualified buyer at a qualified company, you want to empower that person as the champion who introduces you to the key decision maker ? but this is not often easily done without a special human touch. You need to select an experienced rep in your organization to build a relationship as a trusted advisor with that champion lead.

At Marketo, our sales development reps (SDRs) are typically the people who begin navigating a prospect?s organization to determine what tools that person needs to build an internal case for our products. It?s critical to add the human touch to lead nurturing.

Many of our customers find a SDR team reduces their costs, as SDRs are less expensive than outside sales reps. They have also achieved improved conversions, faster lead response times, superior data collection, better revenue cycle analytics and in-house talent development.

Q. Is there ever a point where you should ?fire? a lead that may have once shown interest or is it always better to keep nurturing them until they opt-out or buy?

The cost of calling an incremental lead that is not ready to become a sales lead is very low versus the cost of not calling a qualified prospect and missing out on a deal. If a lead consistently engages with your content and is truly a potential buyer, then there isn?t much harm in continuing to nurture that relationship. (Of course, if they are not a qualified buyer to begin with, then arguably you shouldn?t be nurturing them in the first place!)

While it may be tempting to ?fire? a lead whose score shows promise but never seems ready to buy, resist the urge. They like your content, and you incur almost no extra costs in sending them the great nurturing content you?ve already developed. But if it happens repeatedly, it is OK to raise the threshold for the level of engagement that lead must exhibit before you call them again. At Marketo, our SDRs can put these ?repeat recyclers? into a special category that continues to nurture the prospect but requires a much higher lead score before they become a lead again.

However, if a lead is inactive and hasn?t engaged with your content in 6 months, then clearly they?ve disengaged from your brand. You need to alter your tactics accordingly, and start treating them differently. Consider stopping sending them emails ? if they?re not engaging anyway, you won?t lose anything and may improve your sender reputation.

Q. Can you be more specific about what actions demonstrate ?buying signs? besides pricing and specific product page visits?

Certain levels of content engagement matter more than others, and some are more transparent than others. For example, a visit to your pricing page indicates a high likelihood of purchase. In comparison, an email open only demonstrates simple engagement.

At Marketo, we split our content into three different categories that correlate with the three stages in a typical B2B buying cycle:

1. Early-stage content.

Thought leadership rules B2B marketing because it appeals to prospects at all stages of the buying cycle. Relevant content develops trust with today?s self-educating buyer and shares best practices to build demand and brand awareness. Other best practice content includes webinars and white papers. However, be warned: Prospect engagement at this level does not constitute buying behavior, so don?t put too much weight on their actions.

2. Mid-stage content.

At this stage, you need to answer a specific business question or solve a particular problem for your prospect. It is a good idea to develop content that helps decision makers organize their purchase research around what you sell, such as RFP templates, buyer?s guides, and industry analyst reports. Many companies, including Marketo, place mid-stage content behind (short!) sign-up forms. While such roadblocks diminish potential reach by 80% to 90%, they also keep your funnel stocked with high-quality leads.

3. Late-stage content.

Company-specific information helps interested purchasers evaluate and affirm their selection, but interpreting engagement at this level can be tricky. For instance, a visit to your corporate ?About Us? web page may show high buying interest ? but it could just as easily indicate early stage research. Another perfect example is a demo download. Someone who someone watches your demo may merely want to educate himself. However, if that prospect fills out a form to watch a 20-minute, in-depth product demo, then that?s a buying sign. You may just have a winner.

In each stage of the buying cycle, you can gain visibility into prospect buying intent when you monitor the keywords they use in search. As a general rule, the higher the search specificity, the greater the likelihood of purchase. For example, a search for ?Marketo? suggests much more buying potential than ?marketing automation {add correct link to resource page}.?

A few rules of thumb to keep in mind:
• Content that is self-promotional defeats the purpose of building trust.
• Short content is good.
• Reuse and repurpose your content wherever possible.
• Start small, think big and adapt quickly.

Q. We?re having a hard time ?selling? leadership that lead generation should fall under the marketing umbrella. Marketing?s long term thinking often clashes with sales? short term thinking. Do you have any advice?

This is a good question. As transforming buyer behaviors lengthen the sales cycle, key decision makers want to engage with Sales much later on. So if your lead generation efforts come exclusively from Sales, then you?ll have an extremely narrow funnel. You?ll only be looking for ripe bananas, as Brian Carroll said ? and all bananas aren?t always ripe all the time. On the other hand, a Marketing team that owns lead generation can plant seeds of interest early on and cultivate them until exactly the right time. This makes your sales cycle much more efficient and predictable and reduces seasons of extreme feast or famine.

Another way to look at this is through the words of Adam Smith, the father of modern economics, who said systems are much more productive where there?s specialization. Sales specializes in closing business; Marketing specializes in cultivating it. By definition, Sales isn?t going to be as skilled in other stages of the buying cycle, such as generating leads. It?s just like baseball: you don?t hire a pitcher because he can bat.

Conclusion
Nurturing occurs between people, not companies. No longer is it appropriate to ?always be selling.? Instead, you need to always be helping ? whether information seekers are ready to buy or not. Most of your selling takes place during in-house conversations between the 5 to 25 people typically involved in the corporate buying process, so the more people you help, the better your chances of eventually closing business.

As Brian said In the webinar, 92% of B2B buyers are open to cold calls if the salesperson is relevant. When you think of yourself as a concierge, you become a value-added portion of their day. It?s like eating at a restaurant. If the food is good, but your waiter is rude and inattentive, you won?t enjoy the experience. However, an attentive and personable server leaves you with a positive impression.

Minor and major emergencies can both be treated at a medical center. It does not matter how sick or hurt you are, you should still seek professional help. The reason behind this is because something minor can turn into a major emergency if it is not properly treated. My mother had always told me we had no choice about which man would eventually handle us. It was all down to something called luck; something that I didn't get to see a lot throughout my life. My mother told me that a lot of good horses had been ruined by the cruelty of man and that she hoped that I would not be one of those once good horses joining the slaughterhouse line.

From the horse's mouth is a roleplay about the struggles of horses in the Victorian era. Inspired by stories like Black Beauty and my initial love for history and horses.

The roleplay will take place from various points of view, or even their masters who may treat them cruelly or kindly. You may not even have anything to do with the horses - you may be a rich stately home owner who demands only the best horses to pull your carriage, oblivious to the real struggles of the horse pulling along.

It is set in Victorian London (or the English countryside) in the year 1845. Please be realistic about the setting, this seems pretty needless to say but just in case :)

If you join as a horse - research breeds that were used for your job role. If you choose to join as a Plough horse, you'd play as a draft horse etc.

You can also play up to three characters
That is just a rough outline of what I would like to see in the character description, feel free to add as much as you want, you can never have too much detail in character descriptions!

I don't have many rules - follow the general rules of roleplay gateway! Post regularly, and be realistic! No one lined posts, make sure to check grammar and spelling (this is all obvious stuff but I will say it just in case)

There can be side stories also away from the horses - maybe your a cab driver who has to sell his horse to move away with his family? There is also an option where you are able to play as another person's horse and be (semi) controlled by the other person. Such as if they decide to sell you to someone else, they can to make things more involuntary for the hoses. (However this is the only powerplaying allowed)

Cusco is also the ideal place to buy arts and crafts, with stunning carved wooden handicrafts. Make sure to visit the San Blas district, where artisan open their workshops to visitors during the day, and where there is a small but well stocked market.

First photos of Giffords released since shooting (AP)

HOUSTON ? Two portraits of a smiling Rep. Gabrielle Giffords gave the nation its closest look yet at the congresswoman's remarkable recovery less than six months after she was shot in the head at point-blank range outside a supermarket.

The pictures posted Sunday on Facebook were the first clear photos of the Arizona congresswoman who rose to national prominence after a gunman opened fire on her in January as she met with constituents in Tucson. Six people were killed and 13 others wounded.

But the images left unanswered many questions about her cognitive abilities and when ? or even if ? she will be able to resume her job in Congress.

"The image doesn't tell us the inner mental state or the brain itself, how it's functioning," said Jordan Grafman, director of the Traumatic Brain Injury Research Laboratory at the Kessler Foundation Research Center in West Orange, N.J., explaining that many brain-injury patients look good within months of being hurt.

"What's their social skills? Do they have a nuanced sense of humor? Can they participate in activities? All that is what's important," asked Grafman, who has not treated Giffords.

In one of the images, Giffords smiles broadly and looks straight at the camera like a high school student posing for a yearbook. In another, more candid shot, she is grinning alongside her mother. In both, her smile is largely unchanged, though her hair is shorter and darker. The pictures give few indications she has been hurt, let alone shot in the forehead.

Giffords' aides say she could be ready to be released from a rehabilitation center later this month or in early July. The idea was to discourage a "paparazzi-like frenzy" of photography when she attends outpatient therapy in a more public setting, they said.

The congresswoman's staff said the images had not been altered or touched up in any way. But other than saying the pictures were taken May 17 at the Houston rehabilitation hospital where Giffords has been undergoing treatment, her staff offered no further insight into her recovery.

For months, they have closely guarded Giffords and information about her condition. Her doctors, in the absence of permission from the family to speak publicly, remain mum. So the release of the photos attracted intense interest.

Giffords was shot in the left side of the head, the part of the brain that controls speech and communication. Doctors, friends and families have said she can speak, sing some of her favorite songs and engage in some conversation.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz told NBC's "Meet the Press" she had a "wonderful conversation" Wednesday with Giffords on the phone, and that this time her colleague even initiated some of the topics they discussed.

Since she was wounded, the public's only other glance of Giffords came in grainy images from late April that showed her slowly walking up the steps of a NASA jet that flew her to Cape Canaveral, Fla., to watch her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, rocket into space.

The launch was delayed, forcing Giffords to make a second trip to Florida in May, when she watched the blastoff from a wheelchair.

Giffords spokesman C.J. Karamargin acknowledged that the congresswoman looks different now than in the photos. Her hair is shorter because her head was shaved ahead of surgery to repair a gap in her skull that had initially been left open to allow her brain to swell. Doctors also fixed what appear to be subtle inequities between her eyes seen in the pictures, he said.

The photos were released to help satisfy "intense interest in the congresswoman's appearance." And they seemed to please the public and her admirers.

Hundreds of people commented under the images, which were posted on countless web sites. More than 3,000 people clicked "like" on Giffords' Facebook page.

Some of the comments also mentioned Jared Lee Loughner, 22, the shooting suspect who has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the shooting. He is being held at a Missouri facility where prosecutors hope his competency can be restored after a judge declared him unfit to stand trial.

Others raised questions about the actual extent of Giffords' progress.

"It would be nice to get a truly honest assessment of her internal cognitive experience," wrote Alex Hakkinen, who told the AP he works with brain injury patients at a rehab center in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Hakkinen said Giffords' staff has an obligation to bring her out in public at some point so constituents can assess her abilities, maybe in a "fireside chat" of sorts. Or they should acknowledge that she's incapable of doing so right now, he said.

Chief of Staff Pia Carusone indicated in an interview published Thursday in the Arizona Republic that, despite reports that Giffords is talking and walking, she remains a shadow of her bubbly self. The congresswoman, she said, can verbalize her basic needs, but struggles to string together more complex thoughts.

If her recovery "plateaued" now, Carusone said, Giffords' quality of life would be far less than what she had known before the shooting.

Carusone stopped short of answering the most critical questions: Will Giffords' resume her post in the House of Representatives and will she run for the Senate?

Until the Jan. 8 shooting, some Arizona Democrats viewed Giffords as one of their best hopes for gaining votes in the Senate.

The shooting has created something of a vacuum, with few candidates willing to declare their interest until Giffords' situation is clarified. Carusone has only said that the congresswoman has until May 2012 to decide.

In the short-term, the photos focused attention on Giffords' appearance.

Of the two pictures, one is more clearly posed, that of a smiling Giffords looking directly at the camera. The left side of her head appears slightly distorted and swollen, and a healed scar from a breathing tube can be seen in her neck. A second photo shows Giffords in a more casual light ? smiling while sitting alongside her mother, Gloria Giffords, with the hospital's greenery behind them.

The pictures were taken by Tucson photographer P.K. Weis, who said he has known the congresswoman for at least 10 years.

But brain expert Grafman noted the camera is angled toward Giffords' right side, her better half since the bullet struck her on the left.

For some, simply seeing the congresswoman smiling and radiant was encouraging.

Susan Hileman, who survived three gunshot wounds in the rampage, said she spent Sunday morning smiling while looking at photos of Giffords.

"I am delighted and pleasantly surprised," said Hileman, who was holding the hand of 9-year-old shooting victim Christina-Taylor Green when the gunfire erupted. "Look at that smile. How could you not be happy looking at that smile?"

The pictures, Hileman said, gave her hope as she endures her own painful rehabilitation.

"It's a miracle she's alive ... It's going to be a long road, but if anybody is well-positioned to do it, it's Gabby," she said. "She's physically fit. She's smart. She's driven. She's young ... She has all the pieces in place."

Those elements will ultimately help her long-term recovery, experts say. A person's education, intelligence, environment and life experience affect recovery from a brain injury.

"It's striking. She does look great," said Dr. Richard Riggs, chairman of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Still, Riggs, who has not been involved in Giffords' treatment but has been tracking her progress, said the months after her release will be critical.

Patients who have suffered traumatic brain injury can become easily disoriented, have trouble prioritizing, suffer memory loss and have difficulty recognizing people. Some struggle to do several tasks at the same time.

Most cognitive recovery occurs in the first six months to a year after an injury, though it becomes less noticeable as time progresses. In the second year, progress sharply drops.

"The picture tells us that physically she's having what would appear to be a strong recovery from that standpoint," Riggs said. "But it does not tell us anything about the cognitive capabilities or where she is on the path of independent living much less going back to a job."
